The stories just weren't coming together for a white on white crime episode, so I decided to put the focus on a quesiton that was asked of me by one of the folks in the social networks.
This is his quesiton.
To all the men on my news feed who are lightweight well versed in the feminisms like me, do you still sometimes get afraid or nervous when calling misogyny out in other men? I do. At least if it's someone I don't really know. Or I'm outnumbered in progressive opinions. Or if I do say something I get nervous and start to jumble my words and shit sounds really fragmented. And they usually don't end up listening anyway. Most times I get written off. But sometimes they do see the err. But they may say something else lightweight sexist that I'll let slide or address in a humorous manner because I'm afraid that they'll revert back to just being full on misogynists cause male ego and shit. All that to say, are any of my men friends afraid of men and/or addressing misogyny in men like me? I'd really love the feedback.
I'll be answering that and digging into some news and comment.
From there, I'll pass the microphone to Phoenix Calida and Lisa Loco.
Wow, is it hot outside in the Big Apple, folks! As the temperature moves past 100 degrees, we promise to cool you down with facts, fun and not so much fire. Join Dburt and Capt. Kirk for the latest episode of Afronerd Radio's Mid Week in Review broadcast, airing this Wednesday at 7:30pm EST. The topics slated for discussion are: our thoughts regarding an alleged "embargo" for prospective reviewers of the forthcoming Josh Trank, Fantastic 4 reboot to be lifted a day before the film is to be released; Comic Book Resources provides further verification that the New Line Cinema, Shaft reboot is still a "go" (no collabo considered with David Walker-author of the great comic series?); according to the Daily Beast, a "contest" of sorts involving LA gangs purports to put out a challenge to accomplish 100 kills (gang members and innocents included)....yea Black Lives Matter shouldn't include this (wow); continuing from the Grindhouse episode, football legend, Charles Haley instructs rookie players by telling them to "act white,"; NASA not only affirms that there is another planet that could potentially sustain human life but also that we may not truly be alone in the universe; noted linguist, writer and Columbia U professor, John McWhorter posits that the current antiracism philosophy appears to be perceived as a type of "religion" with fellow scribe, Ta-Nehisi Coates anointed as its priest. And lastly, Dburt just figured out that the concept of "cool" is unequivocally missing in the 21st century. Call the hosts live at 646-915-9620.
On a cool, spring day in 1897, Alfred Haney left his Williamston, Michigan home to earn a day's wage. He knew his wife's peculiar behavior had become more frequent, and he had planned on her seeing the town doctor, but she assured him she was feeling much better. They would go the following day instead. When he returned home later that day, he discovered a macabre murder so bizarre that it shook the entire community to its core. His mother's severed head was set on the dinner table, adorned with a knife and fork on either side. Lying nearby was the old woman's body, soaked in kerosene and set ablaze. Screaming, Alfred Haney ran from the house in search of the law, and while neighbors tried to extinguish the smoldering, beheaded corpse, Haney's wife, Martha, removed herself to the back yard and began digging wildly with her hands. Shortly after the discovery, a sheriff's deputy arrived, taking Martha into custody and lodging her in the local jail at the village hall. Ingham County Sheriff John Rehle, known as J. J. among his constituents, arrived by train and surveyed the carnage. He and his deputy discovered the murder weapon, an axe, hidden behind some boards under the rear stoop. Rehle organized a Coroner's Inquest that was held inside the house where the old woman's body lay. In an attempt to determine her state of mind at the time of the crime, local doctors interviewed the murderess. She told them she spoke frequently with her own dead mother, and her mother had told her to kill the old woman. Over the next several days, court hearings decided her ultimate fate. A panel of three doctors was commissioned to determine her sanity. In the end, there would be no prosecution. Deemed insane, she was sentenced to the Michigan Home for the Dangerous and Criminally Insane in Ionia. What made Martha Haney snap and behead her mother-in-law?
