After forgiving millions of dollars in medical debt, Occupy Wall Street is tackling a new beast: student loans.
Marking the third anniversary of the Occupy Wall Street movement, the group's Strike Debt initiative announced Wednesday it has abolished $3.8 million worth of private student loan debt since January. It said it has been buying the debts for pennies on the dollar from debt collectors, and then simply forgiving that money rather than trying to collect it.
In total, the group spent a little more than $100,000 to purchase the $3.8 million in debt.
Occupy Wall Street has been on a debt-abolishing tear lately -- recently buying nearly $4 million in student loans from debt collectors and then forgiving it.
Now thousands of people across the country are begging them to forgive their loans, too.
Charlene Ingram is one of them.
A single mother of four from St. Louis, Ingram is 41 and has $125,000 in student loan debt.
After struggling for years to find a job that paid more than minimum wage, she enrolled in an undergraduate program at age 37 -- figuring a bachelor's degree would be her only shot at earning enough to support her family. While she was in school, she and her sons delivered phone books in order to put food on the table.
Today we look at the Occupy Wall Street movement, which is now two weeks old and is finallg getting some American media attention. Is this the resurrection of American democracy? What would Jesus do? What of the scenes of police brutality against non-violent protestors who are not resisting arrest?
This very special segment will give you an insiders view of what the Occupy Wall Street movement is all about.
Two people with different backgrounds, different motivations brought together by a common goal.
Maryanne Burke has become involved in the Occupy Wall Street movement, where she has put her networking skills to great use. She has helped organize events for OWS and volunteers for nonprofit organizations, where her fund raising abilities are evident. Maryanne has the ability to motivate others and hopes to inspire people to join the 99%, as we show the country what democracy really looks like.

Many Americans are still hot under the collar, because there is no real economic recovery after the $700 billion Wall Street bailout. This segment of On the Money with Peter Hebert is titled "Occupy Wall Street!" The true unemployment rate is higher than the government's published numbers. The number of Americans living in poverty is remarkably high. Foreclosures and fraud on the courts ruined the public trust and the economy. The top one percent of Americans run the show. What about the rest of America? What about the other 99 percent? Food Stamps are the only public policy measure preventing widespread riots against the establishment.

Oops! Looks like Linda and Debbie are at it once again. And this time they are talking Occupy Wall Street, Occupy Houston, Occupy LA …. and “Occupy This!” Which side of the street do Linda and Debbie stand? Not going to say, but the buzz is there will be a little protesting going on during the show. In polite society, it’s called debating …. but if you know Linda and Debbie … anything is possible!
