A large majority of municipal and public utility broadband networks are successes. Next Century Cities lays out several paths to help your community to reach this winner's circle.
NCC Executive Director Deb Socia describes for listeners a range of business and funding models for community broadband that are creating success stories around the country. Communities such as Santa Monica, CA and Mount Vernon, WA built success by using their networks for replace T1 lines and other old communications infrastructure. Others such as Monticello, MN formed public private partnerships. Jackson, TN and Cedar Falls, IA sell services direct to subscribers.
Socia's organization has assembled quite the brain trust of communities and she is happy to share some of that knowledge. Listeners will get insights into:
preventing critics from defining your success;
defining parameters and goals for success based on constituents' broadband needs;
helping non-technical people understand and become excited about how the network will impact them; and
promoting your successes.
Next Century Cities is a membership organization providing knowledge and peer- support for communities and their elected leaders, including mayors and other officials, as they seek to ensure that all have access to fast, affordable, and reliable Internet.

Do you Still Rob Banks? Diffusing Double-Binds with Kevin FitzMaurice
Today @ 1 pm (CST) on Healthy Mind & Body radio… it is my pleasure to introduce Kevin FitzMaurice, M.S., NCC, CCMHC, and LPC. Kevin and I are going to be talking about THAT LANGUAGE PATTERN, Double-Binds.
Double binds are a linguistic trap. Whether that trap is consciously or unconsciously set, it puts the individual into “NO-WIN” situations in which there are few ways to escape. The implications of this language pattern are far reaching and I’m hoping that Mr. FitzMaurice will be able to shed some light on a few ways to either avoid this trap or “spring it” without losing a foot.
Kevin FitzMaurice has a variety of formal and advanced training in counseling, which includes Addictions Counseling, Family Therapy, advanced Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), Transactional Analysis (TA), and over 1300 hours of diverse training (CEUs). Mr. FitzMaurice, now puts those principles and methods into book form to share them with a wider audience. Currently, he has more than twenty-five books written, most of which are available worldwide as ebooks from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Google, Kobo, and Apple.

Many times when asked most women do not feel they are in an abusive or unhealthy relationship. Domestic violence does not have to just be physical it can include emotional, mental, spiritual, and financial abuse. Many time the abuser will use manipulation and control to get the victim to stay and feel responsible for the violence. We will explore the trauma and behaviors associated with being in an abusive relationship.
We will define what is a victim? What is love? What is intimacy? What is violence? and What is Trauma?
Please join the Counselors and our guest host experts Sandra Scohier, MA, APC, NCC and Melinda Paige, LPC, NCC Founders of The Trauma Competency Institute. We will discuss trauma related symptoms from being in a abusive or unhealthy relationship and discuss a new technique to help victims move on without the effects of PTSD, guilt, shame, and survivor's guilt.
Come Get on the Couch!!!!
As we near Star Trek's 48th Anniversary, we have a fan production 'Project Potemkin" in the house!
"NCC-1711! Set a few years after Star Trek: The Undiscovered Country, this exciting fan film series takes place aboard the starship Potemkin, an up-rated Constitution III-class heavy cruiser. It's on a five-year mission of exploration in deep space where its crew encounters strange new worlds while seeking out new life forms and new civilizations. The Potemkin is an older ship, one of the original twelve. She's been refitted a few times, but she's one of the last of her kind. Its captain, a forty-year veteran of Starfleet, has a unique crew, mostly comprised of inexperienced officers, the occasional cast off from another ship, and a feisty chief medical officer.
Our episodes focus on science fiction as well as action-adventure, humor and drama. Each production varies in its length; we don't restrict ourselves by following a typical four-act television format. Instead, our writers think outside the box. We've produced many vignettes (ranging from 6 to 15 mins), a half-hour episode, and even a full-length episode. Filming takes place in various locations in Southwest Georgia in order to take advantage of the wide variety of unique locations throughout the region. In addition to the studio we've built in Albany, Georgia, we've filmed on a river front in Lee County, in the historic Radium Springs Gardens in Dougherty County, in downtown Americus, and we're looking at other exciting, unique locations throughout the region.
All of this helps make Project: Potemkin a unique Star Trek fan film series!"

The name "Enterprise" is one that has a rich legacy and a long tradition in maritime and naval history. In These Are The Voyages, author, Arnold van Beverhoudt, tells the story of more than 75 vessels named "Enterprise." This is a fascinating story that stretches from the very real 16th Century battles of the Spanish Armada to the fictional 26th Century voyages of Gene Roddenberry's starships "Enterprise."
Arnold acquaints us with a French frigate that was captured by the British Royal Navy in 1705 and became the first HMS Enterprise. In 1775, the first American "Enterprise" helped to ward off the British during the Revolutionary War. In the early 1800s, the schooner USS Enterprise and her crew fought valiantly against French privateers, the ruthless Barbary pirates of the Mediterranean, the powerful ships of the Royal Navy, and the crafty pirates of the Caribbean.
The story continues with tales of other vessels named "Enterprise" that explored the frozen Northwest Passage, steamed the seas and rivers of the United States, Canada, Australia, and India for commercial trade, fought valiant battles during World War II, and sailed the oceans of the world for more than 50 years under nuclear power in defense of freedom. But the story of the name "Enterprise" doesn't end there. There were also hydrogen-filled balloons, Goodyear blimps, a NASA space shuttle, and a privately-owned spaceship named "Enterprise." In the fictional world of television and motion pictures, there have also been starships that carried the name "USS Enterprise" into the deepest reaches of space.
In addition to a 130-page narrative history of vessels named Enterprise, These Are The Voyages devotes about 35 pages to appendices.
