Through workshops, conferences, and publications, Pewewardy has educated youth and adults alike, and his efforts were recognized by the National Indian Education Association, which named him its 2009 Teacher of the Year.

Known for her activism and art, She is presently a professor at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. As a founding Board Member of the National Coalition on Racism in Sports and the Media, her activist-career began with a vigorous dispute with the University of Illinois over their use of a stereotyped image of an American Indian for the school’s sports mascot. She picketed sports events and launched a national debate about the appropriateness of this practice by sports and media. This history of Teters’ work is the subject of a nationally aired award winning documentary “In Whose Honor?” by Jay Rosenstein.

Shappy Seasholtz has an extensive 8-Track tape collection, an impressive selection of View-Master reels, a vast array of plastic figurines of old advertising mascots and far too many long boxes of comic books. Shappy is a National Poetry Slam Champion and is the creator of the Nerd Slam, a poetry competition that is half nerd poetry, half trivia-off. He has appeared on CNN, MTV and HBO's DEF POETRY. His most recent collection of poems, SPOKEN NERD REVOLUTION was published by Penmanship Books in 2011 and his work has appeared in several WRITE BLOODY PRESS anthologies. He is currently in Ohio working on his poetry memoir-AMERICAN BUCKEYE.
Suzan Shown Harjo will discuss the the ongoing struggle to educate people about racist sports team names and the negative mascot images that degrade Native American people. One team in particular is the Washington football team. The are way overdue for a name change. Join us as Suzan Shown Harjo guides us through an historical timeline that documents actions that have been taken to get rid of offensive mascots. Ms Harjo is a well-known Cheyenne and Hodulgee Muscogee advocate for Native American rights. She is a poet, writer, lecturer, curator, and policy advocate, who has helped Native peoples recover over a million acres (4,000 km²) of land.
