Johnny Strozier Keeping It Real (reentry show) June 28, 2015

    in Politics Progressive

    Saturdays 9pmEST (Sundays sometimes)
Johnny Strozier was incarcerated in Georgia prisons for 46 years (from 1968 to 2013), with roughly 15 of them served in solitary confinement. He was initially arrested at age 6, when he and friends burglarized an Atlanta warehouse to steal cigarettes for family members and candy. He was imprisoned at age 10. He was transferred to an adult facility, then his sentence was lengthened by 90 years after cutting a prison guard. Strozier's warden told him he would never exit prison alive because he escaped several times and was involved in gang activity, but Strozier changed. He became a Christian in the 1980s. Strozier got active in church and also gained his high school diploma while still incarcerated. He also became a certified cook and brick mason. Since prison release, Strozier works, counsels youths, completed reentry programs, and attends church twice or more times weekly. Strozier's last cellmate in Macon Prison was Atlanta child killer Wayne Williams. Strozier advocates personal responsibility.

Strozier shares information about reentry opportunities, the importance of avoiding behavior that leads to incarceration, and he brought together other people and groups who share valuable information to improve lives of former inmates and at-risk youths. Pros and Cons of FMCSA Proposed Rule - Drivers with insulin dependent Diabetes

    in Current Events

Saturday June 27th 6:30 PM ET
    347-826-9170

The FMCSA has posted a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking, Qualifications of Drivers; Diabetes Standard, proposing to do away with the Diabetes Exemption Program. Although there are many drivers who feel this is a long overdue rule, others are concerned that the rule (the way it is written) would compromise the safety of the driver and the highways.

Dr Randolph Rosarion, certified medical examiner in the US DOT FMCSA National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners (NRCME) and Elaine Papp, board certified occupational health nurse and founder of Health and Safety Works, LLC, will be our special guests as they discuss the complex and unseen details of insulin dependent Diabetes mellitus and how it relates to the NPR and the professional driver.

Qualifications of Drivers; Diabetes Standard Summary -
FMCSA proposes to permit drivers with stable, well-controlled insulin-treated diabetes mellitus (ITDM) to be qualified to operate commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) in interstate commerce. Currently, drivers with ITDM are prohibited from driving CMVs in interstate commerce unless they obtain an exemption from FMCSA.

    in Books

Suspense Radio is back before we take our summer break for one final hour of great interviews. Two authors on the show for you today led by Chris Karlsen and then Robert Kidera. Both authors have written fantastic books. While we are off for the month of July, make sure you listen back to all the shows you missed On Demand. Also visit www.suspenseradionetwork.com to check out all the shows on the Network.

    Chris Karlsen: "Silk":

The city is in a panic as Jack the Ripper continues his murderous spree. While the Whitechapel police struggle to find him, Detective Inspector Rudyard Bloodstone and his partner are working feverishly to find their own serial killer. The British Museum's beautiful gardens have become a killing ground for young women strangled as they stroll through.

Their investigation has them brushing up against Viscount Everhard, a powerful member of the House of Lords, and a friend to Queen Victoria. When the circumstantial evidence points to him as a suspect, Rudyard must deal with the political blowback, and knows if they are going to go after the viscount, they'd better be right and have proof.

    Robert Kidera: "Red Gold":

Shaken by the death of his beloved wife and wrestling with powerful personal demons, Professor Gabriel McKenna leaves New York City for New Mexico to claim an inheritance from mysterious distant relatives. He finds something other than a Land of Enchantment.

Unseen enemies threaten his life. Old friends turn up and rally to his side. Together they plunge into a lethal struggle for a 19th Century treasure, the fabled Lost Adams gold. McKenna enters a world of violence, passion, sexual abuse, deceit, and death that cause him to question his core beliefs and values, and even his sense of self.

No More Excuses for Not Having Strong Bones

    in Health

Join Partners in Health and Biz talk show host Gail Dixon this Saturday, June 27, at 9:00 a.m. as we discuss "How to Have Beautiful Bones without Hormones." You have no more excuses for not having strong bones.

Call into the studio with your questions and/or comments: 347-945-7433 or visit www.pihradio.net.

Did you know that currently, forty-four million people in the U.S. have mild osteopenia, or thinning bones, and 10 million men and women have full-blown osteoporosis.

While it is true that women are more susceptible to this condition than men, you might be surprised to learn that one out of every four American men over sixty-five will suffer a broken bone in his lifetime because of osteoporosis, and one third of all men over seventy-five currently have osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is a killer. At the very least, it can be a crippler. When your bones become too weak or brittle to handle the stresses of everyday life, they begin to break down internally and then to just plain break, often when you least expect it.  There you are, walking down a sidewalk in February, you slip and fall on a patch of snow-covered ice, and wham, you've fractured your arm and have to flag down a neighbor to help you back into the house.

    Tune in to learn more.
