Author and Film Director William Dickerson

    in Education

The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview William Dickerson.

William Dickerson is a writer and director whose debut feature film, "Detour," was hailed as an “underground hit” by The Village Voice, an “emotional and psychological roller-coaster ride” by The Examiner, and nothing short of “authentic” by The New York Times. He self-released his metafictional satire, "The Mirror," which opened YoFi Fest’s inaugural film festival in 2013 and he alsoe recently completed his third feature film, "Don’t Look Back," for MarVista Entertainment. His award-winning work has been recognized by film festivals across the country. His first book, "No Alternative," was declared, “a sympathetic coming-of-age story deeply embedded in ‘90s music” by Kirkus Reviews. He currently serves on AFI’s Alumni Executive Board and is a Faculty Member at the New York Film Academy.

Based on his challenges while making his debut “microbudget” film, Detour, Dickerson walks the reader through every aspect of making a film in Hollywood. From style direction to financial obstacles, it’s a detailed guide of the experiences of up and coming filmmakers in Los Angeles.

Kirkus Reviews said Detour: Hollywood is “A breezy guide that takes readers inside the sometimes-hair-raising world of do-it-yourself filmmaking, capturing its many frustrations and challenges.”

    Remembering Carnival Traditions

    in Culture

The first carnival was staged in 1912 during the final years of Danish occupation and lapsed during World War I. Revived in 1952, carnival has become the second largest festival in the Caribbean.

A month-long series of dazzling pageants and talent shows is held to choose royalty to rein over the festival. Fun events such as a boat race, Greased Pig Contest and Toddlers Derby entertain everyone at the festivities.

A series of elimination contests to crown top performers are called Calypso Tents. Calypsonions offer satirical commentary on the state of the islands, oftentimes mocking the shenanigans of politicians. Other popular events held during Carnival is j'ouvert, a morning jump up, a food fair presenting the islands’ best traditional eats and a competition to crown the King and Queen of the parade troupes.

A children's and adult’s parade close the lively month with brilliantly costumed and decorated troupes and floats. ~ Courtesy of VI Dept. of Tourism at www.visitusvi.com/culture_history

The Wine of New York's Finger Lakes

    in Entrepreneur

According to Wine Enthusiast magazine, in 2014 New York State ranked as the third most important wine-growing region in the US, after California and Washington state.‎

In this Interview, Rachel Bovard, a fellow upstate New Yorker and part-time employee at DCANTER, will share her  impressions of the wines of the Finger Lakes.  She is a Level 1 Sommelier through the Court of Master Sommeliers and a Diploma Candidate in the Wine and Spirits Educators Trust (the pre-requisite for Master of Wine).  During the discussion Rachel will make the case for cool climate grapes, stating that lighter tasting wines should merit no less consideration than warm climate wines in California and France.

Some of the wines and wineries she will touch on include a Cabernet Franc from Ravines Wine Cellars on Seneca Lake,  a Cabernet Sauvignon from Casa Larga south of Lake Ontario, and a dry Gewurtztraminer from Herman J Wiemer.  Others include a Cabernet Franc made from Finger Lakes grapes at the Oenology Winery in Brooklyn.

We will also note some of the tourist attractions in the area and the Finger Lakes Wine Festival July 10-12 where you can  taste these wines for yourself!  A good reference for the show is Evan Dawson's book on the region, "Summer in a Glass".

Questions discussed on Twitter at #toastdmvbrew.

Our show host Gary Vaughan is an avid winery tourist and blogger of the Delmarva Winery and Brewery Journal.
