In the MYTH WARRIORS™ series we are targeting ideas to begin to assess whether they are credible or not (i.e., they are a myth, fallacy or even a lie). The topic for this episode is, “You are not a helpless victim.”
“: not protected : not able to defend yourself : unable to do something to make a situation, task, etc., better or easier : not able to be controlled” Helpless. (n.d.). Retrieved May 31, 2014, from http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/helpless
Learned helplessness definition?
“[L]earned helplessness, in psychology, a mental state in which an organism forced to bear aversive stimuli, or stimuli that are painful or otherwise unpleasant, becomes unable or unwilling to avoid subsequent encounters with those stimuli, even if they are “escapable,” presumably because it has learned that it cannot control the situation. […]Seligman coined the term learned helplessness to describe the expectation that outcomes are uncontrollable. [...P]rior learning can result in a drastic change in behaviour and seeking to explain why individuals may accept and remain passive in negative situations despite their clear ability to change them.” Learned helplessness. (2014). In Encyclopædia Britannica. Retrieved from http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/1380861/learned-helplessness
"Optimistic people tend to interpret troubles as transient, controllable, and specific to one situation. Pessimistic people, in contrast, believe that their troubles last forever, undermine everything they do and are uncontrollable.” http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2013-02-19/features/sns-201302191830--tms--pagliarictnrp-a20130219-20130219_1_negativity-state-lotteries-helplessness
Life happens and it is not always joyous. There are times when we are challenged so much that our soul hurts. This happens for a number of reasons. There could be an ill parent or spouse, money problems, our own health, child abuse, worries about our children and much, much more. We come to live in fear of any difficult outcome in our lives, and we begin to feel alone. In short, our soul starts to hurt, leading to a deep wounding pain that blinds us to anything other than our pain.
There are two ways we react to a wounded soul. One is anger. The other is depression. In reality, they’re one in the same, as depression is anger directed inward. When we’re depressed, we direct our anger against ourselves because we feel helpless to change what is happening in our lives.
Regardless of how anger manifests itself in our lives, we can hurt others when we are in pain. We may lash out at those around us or we may withdraw from those who love us. Either way, the quality of our lives is greatly changed. If we do not choose to address our pain, we may be in for a long-term cycle of pain.
Millions people suffer from some form of mental illness. Ongoing anger and depression are only a few of the maladies that encompass mental illness. One thing is certain—the longer we allow ourselves to be victim to our pain, the more entrenched in emotional illness we will become.
While seeking spiritual guidance to help address the hurting soul, it is also important to seek help medically or through counseling. Spiritual guidance can help us understand what we’re going through, but we can only heal by stopping the mental and emotional cycle we may be experiencing.

Are you your master or is the external world controlling you? One in reality is more important? If the external world is controlling you then that is your master. If you come from within then you are in control of you and this is the original intention of the human to have direct influence in all that we do. In this manner life is directed by us in all circumstance. Absolutely no one is helpless nor powerless in our reality. We are more powerful than we know or maybe understand or accept. Learned optimism is the idea in positive psychology that a talent for joy, like any other, can be cultivated. It is contrasted with learnedhelplessness. Learning optimism is done by consciously challenging any negative self talk.
Martin Seligman’s came to the concept of learned optimism through a scientific study of learned helplessness, the idea that a certain reoccurring negative event is out of the person's control. As he was performing tests to study helplessness further, he began to wonder why some people resisted helplessness-conditioning. He noticed that, while some subjects blamed themselves for negative outcomes, others blamed the experiment for setting them up to fail.
Seligman shifted his focus to attempting to discover what it is that keeps some people from ever becoming helpless. The answer was optimism. Using his knowledge about condition people to be helpless in the lab, he shifted his focus to conditioning people to be optimists. The result of these experiments led to defining the processes of learning optimism.
JOYCE'S sincere caring for the well-being of those around her has been a driving force behind her research and work. It all started when her son was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes at the age of seven. Throughout his long illness, Joyce felt completely helpless in her search for the answer to this debilitating disease. At 44 her son succumbed to the ravages of Juvenile Diabetes. This became the cause in Joyce’s research for alternative methods to wellness. She felt her son did not have a choice where his health was concerned but now others do.

A poverty mindset is incredibly destructive because it puts us in the role of helpless victim. It tempts us to sit back as spectators to our own destiny. We believe everything that happens to us is the result of outside forces. We have no control.
I see this among believers all the time. The bible commands us to be diligent and wise and promises that those traits lead inevitably to a prosperous life. The opposite of diligence and wisdom is folly and the life of the sluggard. If you think God has good things to say about the foolish, unwise person, you might want to re-read the Book of Proverbs.
But instead of embracing the principles of Proverbs–of hard work, discipline, sowing and reaping–we embrace the poverty mindset, which says, “The mess I’m in isn’t my fault, so I’m powerless to change it. I’ll just sit here watching TV, surfing the internet and chit chatting with my peeps. God is in control, so I’m sure He’ll figure everything out eventually and make my life better.”
I have a feeling that you are tired of feeling like a dead beat. You feel you are serving God the best way you can but you feel tired. You don't feel upward bound. You feel humdrum. You probably have some sick people around you. You have that feeling of helplessness, because you don't have the money to help them, you don't have the strength to help them, so you sit around them feeling helpless yourself. Unfortunately, you are slowly hitting rock bottom. This is a terrible way to go through life. As a matter of fact, you are wondering just what to do. Not only do you need help but your friends need help, and so you are praying and waiting on God to deliver and save. You are probably asking why is life so difficult? This is where you have to thank God for the things that He has already done and wait for Him to answer your prayer. You have to see His will in the Glory of the moment. Now, listen well so that you will understand more about the ways of God.
