Valerie Kote-Tawia has been writing captivating stories since she discovered her gift early in her youth. A former Alternative School teacher, she walked away from the security of that job to pursue her true passion: writing. Valerie has managed to merge the expression of her gift with the burden on her heart for youth; creating compelling work that entertains and transforms lives.
The success of her first self-produced and directed teen stage play, Would You Be Left, propelled her on the journey of creating the teen book series, Set Apart. Set Apart chronicles the drama-filled lives of five friends as their experiences inspire them to reset the "norm" and persuade others to live as they were created and called...set apart. It is a series about tough decisions, mistakes, second chances and forgiveness. It’s a series that keeps it real (and right). There is no topic off-limits.
Valerie's vision is to revolutionize the entertainment industry by captivating young audiences with books, magazines, TV and film that promotes virtuous lifestyles of high self-respect, self-worth and moral integrity. This series launches the next step in the fulfilling of her mission to create clean, clever and stirring work that compels youth to live set apart and inspire others to follow. She hopes to use the book series to fund and propel teen centered stage and film projects as well as create a platform to encourage youth to break away from the crowd and LIVE SET APART!

Hi, I'm Mark Venturini, author of the mid-grade fantasy novel, Whispers from Forbidden Earth. DJ Darryl C (d. late 1990’s)
Formed in Harlem in 1977 by a group of high school pals, they began giving performances at neighborhood playgrounds.
Mike C worked in a recording studio and invited the crew down there. They wrote rhymes on the way there and the song turned into the hip hop classic “High Powered Rap.” They pressed the records themselves and sold them out of their trunks right to their fans.
Someone of Sugar Hill Records heard the song and gave it GMF to perform. This caused a bit of a feud between the two groups for a time.
Eventually the Crash Crew signed on to Sugar Hill Records and recorded several tracks.
EK Mike C lives in NY and drives transit buses. Barry works as a security guard at the Nation’s Capitol. La Shubee is the assistant director at NYU food services.

Birmingham, Alabama - the Magic City - saw events and courageous people who played a central role in the Civil Rights struggle. World Footprints goes on a walking tour through history along the Civil Rights Heritage Trail as we step onto the grounds where African Americans confronted Jim Crow era voilence with non-voilent civil disobedience. We will also explore Kelly Ingram Park and Birmingham's 4th Avenue Business District and discuss the time when segregation made this the city's "Little Harlem".
Brimingham is also known for it's rich musicial traditions and we'll pay homage to two iconic musical figures: Henry "Gip" Gipson whose 'juke joint' is the last standing music venue of it's kind in Alabama. Gip's Place has welcomed musicians from all over the world and every Saturday music lovers travel miles for an all-night music tailgate party on a "Sanford and Son" style lot. We will also introduce Dr. Frank Adams, Sr., a charter member of the Alabama Hall of Fame, who regaled us with stories of his life, a musical set and his time playing with greats like Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington. Sadly, Doc Adams passed away only one month after our meeting with him. We are honored to showcase his music throughout today's show.
As a side note, our trip to Birmingham was a very pleasant surprise. We highly recommend a visit to Birmingham, Alabama. There's a lot waiting for visitors to discover in the city "where freedom lives".
