HBO World Championship Boxing was live from the Salle des Étoiles in Monte Carlo, Monaco as Gennady “GGG” Golovkin was set to defend his WBA and interim WBC middleweight titles against Martin Murray in a bout scheduled for 12 rounds. Murray was supposed to test Golovkin and finally provide a test for “GGG,” who has run through his opposition—riding an 18 KO/TKO streak heading into the fight.
Last time Murray was headlining an HBO WCB broadcast he was in Argentina, and he was on the bad side of a controversial unanimous decision loss to the lineal middleweight champion, at the time, Sergio Martinez. Since the loss, Murray has won 4 in a row, albeit against softer opposition.
Still, Murray appeared like a legitimate test for Golovkin or at least the best fighter heading into a bout with actual momentum.
Golovkin started out the fight in his typical fashion and didn’t rush in there, especially when you consider the way other fighters with the same kind of power typically do. Instead, Golovkin was methodical and tried gauging openings opposed to jumping on his opponent.
Murray utilized a mixture of punches, but mostly stayed in the same style. Still, Murray found success in brief spots with jabs to the body and overhands, nothing landed flush, and it was always one shot at a time.
Golovkin finally landed a decent shot to close out the first round; it was enough to show Murray his power and win him a slow round.
The second round was much better for Murray, who made it a point to get off first and disrupt Golovkin’s approach. Murray won the round by keeping “GGG” from sitting down on his punches and landing more than one shot at a time.
Since boxing is a sport of tradition -- good, bad and otherwise -- we here at Queensberry Rules Radio have decided to exercise our right to hold another tradition of our own, in previewing a Gennady Golovkin fight in the most fanboy way possible. What more can we say about Golovkin? He's hip! He's fresh! He's almost Mexican! And he'll take out your entire family if you say otherwise. This week on TQBR Radio, James Foley of Bad Left Hook and The Queensberry Rules' Patrick Connor welcome back to the show writer for The Cruelest Sport, Jimmy Tobin. Consider yourself warned: there will probably be only small amounts of objectivity here. Thanks for tuning in!
How far would you travel to see a boxer you enjoyed watching ply his craft? This past Saturday, attending Gennady Golovkin's easy destruction of Marco Antonio Rubio in Carson, CA, I heard everything from Northern California, to Iowa, to Connecticut. If there were any question as to the budding stardom of "GGG," many remarked that this past weekend's success was the answer. This week on TQBR Radio, James Foley of Bad Left Hook and The Queensberry Rules' Patrick Connor pour accolades all over the Killer from Kazakhstan. But also on the agenda: Nicholas' Walters handling of Nonito Donaire on the undercard, as well as various other news pickings and musings. Thanks for tuning in!

It's happening again. Gennady Golovkin has vowed to rid the world of evil, and the only man standing in his way is "El Veneno" Marco Antonio Rubio. Okay, so there are a lot of men standing in his way aside from Rubio, but the Mexican veteran is the only heart pure enough, the only balls big enough, to accept the GGG Challenge. (That's hyperbole.) James Foley of Bad Left Hook and The Queensberry Rules' Patrick Connor are proud to be overly kind to Golovkin once more while previewing a fight of his. Also up this week: recaps of Jermain Taylor vs Sam Soliman and Cornelius Bundrage vs Carlos Molina, and a preview of Nonito Donaire vs Nicholas Walters, plus other stuff. Thanks for tuning in!

Fat Man. Little Boy. Chernobyl. Three Mile Island. Bikini Atoll. Gennady Golovkin's ledger. All have been vaporized and forever tainted. What is it, exactly, that Golovkin carries in his fists? Dynamite? Adamantium? Anvils? The Ghost of Tom Joad? Hyperbole aside, Golovkin is tearing through the ranks at 160 lbs. -- what you'd expect any middleweight badass with a point to prove. Golovkin's obliteration of Daniel Geale was impressive, even if Bryant Jennings' win over Mike Perez was not. This week on TQBR Radio, Bad Left Hook's James Foley and Patrick Connor of Queensberry Rules turn the GGG hype up a notch and fawn all over one of the podcast's favorite sons. Also on the agenda, a preview of Brandon Rios vs Diego Chaves and Sergey Kovalev vs Blake Caparello. Thanks for tunint in!

This Saturday the new face of HBO Boxing makes his 2015 debut as Gennady "GGG" Golovkin goes to Monte Carlo, Monaco, to defend his WBA Super and IBO World Middleweight titles. Along with his interim WBC World Middleweight title against . This is the 1st big event on HBO since the Brandon Rios - Mike Alvarado facade that was put on in front of most of boxing fan's eyes that expected both boxers to actually give their 100%. Between Golovkin, who wants to be one of the bigger stars in the sport. Murray, who has shown, isn't afraid of the big spot, we shouldn't have the same problem with these two.
Golovkin will be stepping into the ring with now the 2nd highest KO percentage of any champion, as Deontay's Wilder win against Bermane Stiverne in January topped him. GGG still has an unblemished record of 31-0 with 28 stoppages, and while a lot of people thought Geale is a better fighter than Murray, I personally think Murray will be Golovkin's biggest challenge to date. Golovkin has wanted bigger, better opponents, but thus far, one of those top tier opponents are yet to bite and leaving the division may be his only option.

Generally when the waters near the shore of a beach recede, it means a tsunami is on its way and you need to run your ass off. This weekend, the receding waters signify the imminent arrival of one of the hardest hitting fighters in the world today, Gennady Golovkin. You should still run your ass off, however. The last minute cancelation of Tyson Fury vs. Dereck Chisora II means the boxing world will be even more dependent on Golovkin-Geale to satisfy its bloodlust. This week on TQBR Radio, Bad Left Hook's James Foley and Patrick Connor of Queensberry Rules do a comprehensive preview of Golovkin-Geale and the Bryant Jennings vs Mike Perez co-feature on HBO, and recap last weekend's card from Macau, China that featured Zou Shiming, Guillermo Rigondeaux and Brian Viloria. Joining the jealous junkies this week is boxing writer and Bad Left Hook contributor Steve Janoski. Thanks for tuning in!

This episode will be recaping the action that took place at that MSG. Before the explanation of this fight, I must say, the atmosphere of a “star” was in full effect. The lights dimmed, the replays of his devastating KOs were shown on the big screen, and the WWE-like entrance was made. As Gennedy Golovkin walked through the crowd before going into the ring before entering the ring to face Daniel Geale, it was clear the crowd and the promotions were behind GGG. Anyone who didn’t think GGG attracted a good following needed to see the crowd reaction as he entered to the very loud crowd. Gennady “GGG” Golovkin took on Marco Antonio Rubio Saturday night and the Stub Hub Center in Carson California and it was business as usual for Golovkin.
The Kazakh knockout machine extended his consecutive KO streak to 18 stopping Rubio in the second round. Golovkin was simply too much for Rubio from the opening bell. In the first round Golovkin was already landing power punches that had tremendous effect on Rubio.
Many boxing fans were perhaps rightly more excited for the co-feature in the Barclay’s Center Saturday night than they were for the “Triple G” mismatch that followed, as the established Nonito Donaire (33-2, 21 KOs) went up against the hungry up-and-coming star, Nicholas Walters (24-0, 20 KOs).
Although this fight was looked upon as a 50/50 fight, there were still many who picked Donaire, feeling that Walter”s record was somewhat padded and because he had never gone a full twelve rounds, that he would be exposed by the experienced and durable Filipino. On the flip-side however, there were of course question marks surrounding the 31-year old Donaire. How much did he really have left? He hadn’t looked the same since being badly defeated on points last April by the great Cuban Guillermo Rigondeaux. There were rumors that he had been getting beaten beaten up in sparring.
Gennady Golovkin gave the boxing world something else to think about other than likely-failed match ups and weird Twitter rants from fighters in destroying Matthew Macklin this past weekend. But the boxing sphere doesn't cease to revolve and rotate, and Queensberry Rules Radio, hosted by James Foley of BadLeftHook.com and Patrick Connor of Queensberry-Rules.com, comes back for another week of boxing discussion. This week, TQBR Radio is joined once again by Jimmy Tobin of TheCruelestSport.com to get his take on last weekend's fights - including Golovkin-Macklin, Thomas Oosthuizen vs Brandon Gonzales, Sergio Mora vs Grzegorz Proksa, Anthony Crolla vs Gavin Rees and much more - and also to preview this coming weekend's action, like Tony Thompson vs David Price II. And as an added bonus, Alex McClintock, also of TQBR, joins the show for the second week in a row to get in on the party. Thanks for tuning in!
If you hold still for a few minutes, you'll hear a residual sonic boom from the left hooks Gennady Golovkin landed on Curtis Stevens in round 2. Voted Kazakhstan's Most Eligible Bachelor of 2008 and given the key to the city of Kickassville the following year, Golovkin appears to be on a legitimate tear right now. The biggest issue with him may not be who will or will not fight him, rather how Jimmy Tobin, writer for The Cruelest Sport who will be joining us, will fit his Golovkin shrine into his Volkswagon Rabbit when he moves from his granny flat. This week, Mr. Tobin once again joins James Foley of Bad Left Hook and Patrick Connor of Queensberry-Rules to heap praise upon Gennady Golovkin, discuss Mike Perez vs. Magomed Abdusalamov and its fallout, and preview Rocky Martinez vs. Mikey Garcia, Nonito Donaire vs. Vic Darchinyan II and Demetrius Andrade vs. Vanes Martirosyan. Thanks for tuning in!
