TEENS HOMICIDE, SUICIDE AND FIREARM DEATHS

    in Social Networking

In 2010, males ages 15 to 19 were nearly four times more likely to commit suicide, six times more likely to be victims of homicide, and eight times more likely to be involved in a firearm-related death than were females of the same age.

    IMPORTANCE

Homicide and suicide is the second and third leading causes of death, respectively, among teen’s ages 15 to 19, after unintentional injury In 2010, firearms were the instrument of death in 85 percent of teen homicides and 40 percent of teen suicides. While non-firearm injuries result in death in only one out of every 760 cases, almost one in four youth firearm injuries are fatal.

Although other teens are the perpetrators of many of the homicides of teens below age 18, two-thirds of the murderers are eighteen or older.] Gang involvement has been associated with many teen murders; in 2002, nearly three-quarters of teen homicides were attributed to gang violence. Although school-related homicides receive substantial media attention, in the 2009-10 school years they accounted for about one percent of all child homicides.

Mood disorders, such as depression, dysthymia, and bipolar disease, are major risk factors for suicide among children and adolescents. One study found that more than 90 percent of children and adolescents who committed suicide had some type of mental disorder. Stressful life events and low levels of communication with parents may also be significant risk factors. Female teens are about twice as likely to attempt suicide; however, males are much more likely to actually commit suicide.

    Firearm Safety in Your Home

    in Motivation

According to Corey Whelan a freelance writer in New York for the Examiner, statistically, in more then one third of households containing a working firearm, far more individuals, especially children, are accidentally shot. In addition to the number of children wounded or killed by firearms, women also disproportionately find themselves at the wrong end of a gun in their own homes, with a current or former romantic partner typically pulling the trigger. According to a report filed by the Washington Sate Department of Social Health Services, a child or teen is killed once every seven and a half hours with a gun, either by accident or by suicide. In 72 percent of these cases, the firearm used was housed in the victim's own residence. Join us as we discuss this issue.

Special Edition: Is America Too "Gun Crazy" For It's Own Good?

    in Social Networking

As the rate of firearm ownership rises in the USA so does the rate of gun related injury and death.  That simple fact is enough to send the firearm industry into a PR frenzy to pump out false information intended to mislead and frighten the American people.  The right to keep and bear arms is not under threat when common sense safety measures are proposed by our elected leaders but the tactics employed by those who make a huge profit from gun sales have fueled a culture of firearm obsession and fetishism.  The higher the number of gun related injuries and deaths, the more resistance we see in putting safety policies in place and the bigger the bump we see in sales, largely by firearm enthusiasts and "patriot militia" or anti-government groups.  It is time we ask ourselves, "Has our country become gun crazy?"

How Many Times Can We Watch Unarmed Civilians Gunned Down by Islamic Terrorists?

How Many Times Are We Going to Watch Unarmed Civilians Gunned Down by Islamic Terrorists?

Larry Pratt has been Executive Director of Gun Owners of America for over 30 years. GOA is a national membership organization of 300,000 Americans dedicated to promoting their Second Amendment freedom to keep and bear arms. GOA lobbies for the pro-gun position in Washington, D.C. and is involved in firearm issues in the states. GOA's work includes providing legal assistance to those involved in lawsuits with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, the federal firearms law enforcement agency. Pratt has held elective office in the state legislature of Virginia, serving in the House of Delegates.

There was Charlie Hebdo, the January 7th attack by Islamic fundamentalists on the French newspaper in Paris.  Then the attacks in Copenhagen, one person was killed, and two others injured, in a shooting near a Copenhagen synagogue, just hours after a gunman with an automatic rifle opened fire on a cafe hosting a free speech event organized by a controversial Swedish artist who has faced threats for his caricatures of Muhammad.  Now we’re being warned of a possible Islamic terrorist attack on the Mall of America; but, no guns allowed there.

Does the High Rate of Gun Violence in America Reflect Our Values?

    in Parents

Today our guest is Attorney Mike McLively from the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence. We will discuss the complexity of gun laws in the US.

The latest manifestation of this "hot" topic is campus life and guns -- "lawmakers in 10 states are busy adapting the issue of campus sexual assault to the campaign to arm college students". (http://nyti.ms/1D2uR1S)

How do we understand the prevalence of gun violence in America?
60% of the US homicide occur using a firearm. In other gun permeated countries like Finland it is only 19%. United States has the highest gun ownership in the world. (The Washington Post, 12/14/12)

Is it totally unrealistic to think we can ever become a land without guns such as Japan? Are they smarter than we are? What's the story?
