In the United States, the annual incidence of sports-related concussion is estimated at 300,000. In Canada, it is estimated to be 30,000. Estimates regarding the likelihood of an athlete in a contact sport experiencing a concussion may be as high as 19% per season.
It is becoming exceedingly difficult to detect a concussion because symptoms may not become apparent to the athlete, trainer, coach or medical professional for hours or days. Sport needs to remove the guess work on whether an athlete is concussed. Remove the athlete’s decision to cover up a concussion.
Cerora, which is based at Ben Franklin TechVentures, recently obtained early financing that will help it improve its MindReader device. The technology is designed to pick up even mild concussions, which MRIs and CT scans can’t diagnose, Simon said. Between 85 to 90 percent of all concussions and traumatic brain injuries are mild so many go undiagnosed, Simon said.

The notorious hit on Canada's hockey darling on Sidney Crosby back in 2011 sparked a national conversation about head injuries in hockey. But such hard hits aren't just hurting the pros.
The Hockey Concussion Education Project analyzed the brains of male and female varsity hockey players and found disturbing evidence of early brain changes that could be the first signs of long term pathologies and cognitive deficits. A collaboration of specialists provided new physical evidence that identifies early brain change as a result of concussion, and observed that diagnosed concussion incidence was 3-5 times higher than previously reported.
The HCEP study adds that a history of concussion may result in alterations of the brain's white matter make-up. White matter affects how the brain learns and functions by transmitting signals from one part of the brain to the other.
Dr. Echlin shares the HCEP Study results and research findings, while he discusses the risk of concussions and what it all means for the future of sports. We are joined LIVE on Wednesday, March 26th, @ 7PM EST at BEYONDtheCheers on blogtalkradio and a repeat broadcast every Friday at NOON on AMFM247.
14 year-old Ben Robinson played rugby for his school. After being treated three times for blows to the head and sent back onto the field following each, he collapsed and later died in hospital.
Ben is one of the rare documented cases in the world of young athletes dying from Second Impact Syndrome (SIS).
Death from sport-related head trauma, although devastating in every case, occurs less than death by other causes. Since Ben died, his dad has become an advocate for change.
Peter Robinson makes some valid points:
There should be a chain of health-and-safety procedures in place.
Responsibility for safety should be shared by players, coaches, referees and parents.
There are ways to reduce the risks and save lives.
Ben's concussion should have been spotted and his son may have survived. Peter shares with us how his family and life has been altered.

Most sports-related head injuries, such as concussions, allow for complete recovery. However, concussions which temporarily interfere with the way the brain works, can also pose serious health risks, ranging from temporary memory lapses to fatal brain swelling.
Concussion can cause temporary loss of brain function leading to cognitive, physical and emotional symptoms, such as confusion, vomiting, headache, nausea, depression, disturbed sleep, moodiness, and amnesia.
Ally Crich is a 19 year-old brain injury survivor, who experienced six concussions over the course of five years. Her first concussion occurred when she was 13, and part of a provincial soccer team.
Devin Kernaghan had a promising future in sports. He wrestled at the national level and was on track to wrestle in University. A slight error in judgement while playing football cost him his dream. After having suffered a concussion, his life dramatically changed from having seizures and headaches, to light and noise sensitivities, that plague him still today, even after three years.
Ally and Devin share their stories of how concussion drastically altered their health and potential, on our LIVE broadcast on Wednesday, December 18th @ 7PM EST at BEYONDtheCheers on blogtalkradio. Dial-in TOLL FREE 1-877-357-2448 in Canada and United States to ask a question, or email in advance.

Today parents, athletes and sport associations are caught up in a concussion conundrum! While education and awareness about concussions is attracting more attention, the legal path of concussive incidents is one seldom ventured or understood.
Now, policies, products, rules and the law are beginning to address the issue head on (pun intended). States, provinces and countries are looking to establish legal guidelines regarding who should be responsible for the athletes and their safety. “While the National Football League (NFL) has made several sweeping changes to its player safety regulations over the last decade, Dr. Robert Cantu, of Sport Legacy Institute, said those standards aren’t being replicated in youth football”
It’s time for the nation to wake up and demand that those in charge of full-contact youth sports be held accountable. Parents of aspiring young football players need assurance that the safety of their children, ages five to fourteen, is a priority. It may be time for parents to demand changes to the rules and policies in youth football for whenever a child suffers a head injury. Katherine “Price” Snedaker and Paul Anderson share their knowledge on how the law and how concussions can affect you and your kids.
