Our guest, Dick Wolfe, is a retired Captain from the U.S. Navy's Medical Service Corps with several worldwide assignments to include leading the training of the Navy's 5000 Medical Corpsman while assigned to the Naval School of Health Sciences. He is currently consulting with health care organizations on safeguarding Protected Health Information - P.H.I. - and is confounder of the nationwide P.H.I. Protection Network and spent many years with Booz Allen Hamilton, management consultants, supporting TRICARE, the military health care system, which provides medical care to nearly 10 million beneficiaries.
Dick has taught as an Adjunct Professor at Washington Adventist University in the Health Care Administration and Organizational Management programs for nearly 20 years and currently, is the lead instructor in the University's Compensation courses. He has worked on compensation issues on all levels - from executive level compensation development and negotiation to developing entry level salaries in urban environments. He was an Assistant Vice-President with Wells Fargo Bank specializing in human resources management. He was responsible for worldwide staff development for the Bank's Corporate and International Divisions.
Our interview and discussion will highlight many areas of interest and will help business and other organization leaders better understand basic executive compensation and what's included.
It seems as though all the talk in the human resources and employee benefits world today is about how employers are trying to "get out of the benefits business." The combination of the 2008 recession coupled with the passage of the Affordable Care Act stagnated employee compensation and began to erode employee benefits packages -- all in the name of cutting back on expenses and improving corporate profitability.
Then, on January 2, 2015, Bobby Fry, one of the owners of Bar Marco, in Pittsburgh, PA, tweeted that the restaurant would stop accepting gratuities from its patrons and, starting in April, move its 20 full-time employees to a $35,000 base salary and provide full health coverage, vacation days and private shares. The Internet exploded with interest.
About two weeks later, Hartford, CT-based Aetna announced it would raise it's minimum wage to $16/hour -- begining in April 2015. The company will also give approximately 7,000 employees access to health benefits next year that should lower their out-of-pocket costs by up to $4,000.
Economists Jan Zilinsky and Justin Wolfers released a paper coincident with the Aetna annoucement that reviewed the question: Under what circumstances can raising the pay of low-skilled workers at large corporations lead to general improvements in productivity?

In 1927, the US Supreme Court case Buck v. Bell set a legal precedent that states may sterilize inmates of public institutions. The court argued that imbecility, epilepsy, and feeblemindedness are hereditary, and that inmates should be prevented from passing these defects to the next generation. On 2 May 1927, in an eight to one decision, the US Supreme Court ordered that Carrie Buck, whom it called a feebleminded daughter of a feebleminded mother and herself the mother of a feebleminded child, be sterilized under the 1924 Virginia Eugenical Sterilization Act. Buck v. Bell determined that compulsory sterilization laws did not violate due process awarded by the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution. It also bolstered the American eugenics movement and established legal authority for sterilizing more than 60,000 US citizens in more than thirty states, until most of the practices ended in the 1970s.
The purpose of this hour is to share how you can use the Law of Compensation to lift yourself out of the place where you are to the place where you rightfully belong. Your right place is where you can enjoy success and plenty; this is natural, as the Law intended; your failure to realize these things is a miscalculation, a mistake. The Law does not need to change. Success or prosperity does not need to be made, it always is. But you in turn must change; then your affairs will follow the change.
