What started simply as a father telling stories to his children at night has led to putting those words into writing.  This series is intetended to be entertaining for a child with a great story line but it also conveys a positive message.

The four books are based of real life stories Lew has experienced, and incorporates one of each of his four children in their own book.

Walking the Woods and the Water: In Patrick Leigh Fermor's footsteps from the Hook of Holland to the Golden Horn:

In 1933, the eighteen-year-old Patrick Leigh Fermor set out in a pair of hobnailed boots to chance and charm his way across Europe, "like a tramp, a pilgrim, or a wandering scholar." The books he later wrote about this walk, A Time of Gifts, Between the Woods and the Water, and the posthumous The Broken Road are a half-remembered, half-reimagined journey through cultures now extinct, landscapes irrevocably altered by the traumas of the twentieth century.

Aged eighteen, Nick Hunt read A Time of Gifts and dreamed of following in Fermor's footsteps. In 2011 he began his own "great trudge"—on foot all the way to Istanbul. He walked across eight countries, following two major rivers and crossing three mountain ranges. With only Fermor's books to guide him, he trekked some 2,500 miles through Holland, Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey.

His aim? To have an old-fashioned adventure. To slow down and linger in a world where we pass by so much, so fast. To discover for himself what remained of hospitality, kindness to strangers, freedom, wildness, adventure, the mysterious, the unknown, the deeper currents of myth and story that still flow beneath Europe's surface.

  • Indie Books Show #66 (Mary Barr)

    in Books

Tune in and join me as I welcome this week's guest.
Author Mary Barr joins me this week to talk about her books.  We'll discuss her novellas, novels & juvenile fiction titles.
    From her novella The Publisher:
Each day with trust and good faith we send our beloved children off to school. We assume they arrive safely, enjoy time with their friends and learn their lessons. We think we know where they are and who they’re with. But life can change in a heartbeat, so can circumstances, places and people and, as a result we never remain the same. Change is often good, sometimes bad, but always constant. The Publisher takes you into the lives of the Smelt family. Joe, Suzanne and their two children, six year old Libby and thirteen year old Connor.
It is a normal school day just like any other, until Joe – the publisher – begins reading a manuscripts. In the manuscript he learns that his children are not at school. They have been kidnapped and are being held hostage until the ransom is paid. Each detail of what he must do is precisely laid out as another page of the manuscript unfolds. Suzanne has done someone wrong and, if she can right the situation her children will go free, if not, they will die. And so, they sit and wait for the knock on the door and the next installment of the manuscript that holds within its pages their children’s fate.

A Kind Voice on Books: Susan Coll & The Stager

    in Books

Tonight's guest on A Kind Voice on Books is Washington DC based fiction author, Susan Coll. Her latest work is the novel called The Stager. The story is a layered narrative from a set of dysfunctional characters, set in a posh Bethesda, Maryland gated community. The Stager is a classic and funny portrait of fragile modern day egos, who are unsatisfied, know-it-alls - be they adults, 10 years old, or a rabbit!
