Lisa Mann Co-Hosts with Rae Gordon & Kevin Selfe - In Benefit Of Aly

    in Music

Show # 295 - Live, Uncut & Uncensored Conversations With "Musicians You Should Know"

Back in July 2015, Lisa Mann was a guest on the show.  During our talk she mentioned her niece Aly and her battle with cancer and a benefit, which was going to be held.

I told Lisa to include a silent auction item from me…the chance to co-host and select two guests.

Well in the end Lisa was the winning bid – not sure there were any other bids or Lisa has had this deep desire to fulfill her Robin Quivers Radio Role!

The two musicians she selected are also from the Portland area…Lisa showing love to her peeps in the northwest.

First is Rae Gordon. She was awarded a Muddy Award in 2014 for Best Female Vocalist and is a constant presence in the Northwest Music Scene.  I look forward to learning more about Rae during the show.

Kevin Selfe is a Couch Kid and would have been booked for a Couch Kid New Music Segment with the release of his latest, Buy My Soul Back.  When Lisa mentioned his name it was a done deal!

As Co-host, Lisa will be asking a lot of the questions and I can guarantee there will be fun galore.

Of course we will hear some music from each of these folks.

Las Cafeteras rocks a new tour. Jill Jack is back in town and back on the show.

    in Music

Las Cafeteras create a vibrant musical fusion with a unique East LA sound and a community-focused activist message. Their Afro-Mexican rhythms, diverse instruments & inspiring lyrics about love & the fight for justice is infectious.  They remix  traditional Son Jarocho sounds with Afro-Caribbean marimbol and cajón beats, poetry in English and Spanglish, and instruments like jarana, requinto, a donkey jawbone and the Tarima. Just back from their most recent tour, they join Music FridayLive! this Friday just before their big homecoming show at the famous El Rey Theater is Los Angeles. We are delighted to talk with them on Music Friday Live.

Jill Jack is a consummate force on stage, powering through country, rock,  folk and blues, leading the band and making friends with the audience.  There is nothing like a Jill Jack’s performance – you get all of her – her, high range voice, her high-octane music, her blinding smile and lots of conversation.  She has played with Bob Seger,  Emmylou Harris, Chris Issak, Loretta Lynn and many other greats.  She is playing the West Coast this week, headlining a show in Los Angeles at the famous Molly Malone's.   And she is active in her Detgroit community and even in Haiti making lives bvetter.Jill Jacks is on tour, on point and on fire, and we so happy she will be on Music FridayLive!

CKNM from Hans Theessink, D.L. Duncan, Randall Bramlett & CKNM from Guy Davis

    in Music

SHOW # 294 – Live, Uncut & Uncensored Conversations With “Musicians You Should Know”

Back on March 25, 2013 Hans Theessink was a guest on the Couch.  It was the World Premier of his album with Terry Evans, Wishing Well.  We spoke about his life and the partnership with Terry and things they were working on.  Back in April, True & Blue was released.  Hans and I decided to wait until he was in the same time zone, so tonight he calls from Houston, TX

D.L. Duncan is one of the most talented musicians in America and many people do not know him.  He has two BMA nominations for songs he co-wrote with Curtis Salgado, he has released five albums in his career, and the latest is simply titled D.L. Duncan.  We’ll find out more about this wonderful musician.

Randall Bramlett has released a new album, Devil Music. This is a thrill; I have been a fan for years, back to his time with Sea Level, and his work with Greg Allman and Widespread Panic.  He has led his own bands and was Steve Winwood’s go-to tour mate for 16 years, including the ’94 Traffic reunion. He and I will talk more about his incredible career and listen to the music on the album.

Guy Davis returns for a Couch Kid New Music Segment for his new release, Kokomo Kid.  Guy has been incredibly busy and we will talk about his life since he appeared on The Couch on October 14, 2013 while we check out the new album.

Monkey Junk all-stars from Canada. The Strands bring us piano-driven jazz-pop

    in Music

Ottawa-based band MonkeyJunk  plays a blend of swamp-rock roots and blues that in the relatively short time has earned them a collective 20 Maple Blues Awards, two Canadian Independent Music Awards, a Blues Music Award (USA), and a JUNO Award in 2012.   Monkey Junk is three musicians who individually had established careers prior to forming MonkeyJunk: vocalist, baritone guitarist, harmonica and organ player Steve Marriner, lead guitarist Tony D and drummer/percussionist Matt Sobb.  We are delighted that they will join us on Music FridayLive! this week with their new album, Moon Turn Red.

The strands formed in 2011 bring a genre-defying sound they like to call Artisanal.  Thoughtful and provocative lyrics dominate, carried by a piano with a subdued drum and sophisticated guitar grooves.  The result is almost jazz, but not quite – the Strands straddle the line between jazz and pop.  Lead singer Amanda Campbell delivers original material  - much of it written by the band's keyboard and piano artist Susan Ferrari - with a smooth voice, backed by the legendary Richard Green on lead guitar, Ferrari on piano and keys and the founder of the group, Paul, on bass.  Restrained, thoughtful, striking, the Strands stand out and we are glad they are taking the time to talk with us on Music FridayLive!.

Les Copeland, Andy Cohen, Ryan Lee Crosby & Couch Kid New Music from Monkey Junk

    in Music

Show #292 – Live, Uncut & Uncensored Conversations With Musicians You Shold Know

Les Copeland caught the attention of “Honeyboy Edwards” and Michael Frank and recorded his debut on Earwig in 2010.  His sophomore effort, also on Earwig, is now out and has folks talking about Les more and more.  We’ll talk about his journey and discuss and listen to the songs from To Be In Your Company

Andy Cohen has spent many years on the road sharing his talents as a masterful acoustic guitarist, folklorist and troubadour.  His new album is entitled Road Be Kind and contains one original and 15 interpretations of older songs. Andy and I will discuss his musical education and the new album.

Ryan Lee Crosby came to us through Couch Kid Ted Drozdowski.  Ryan’s fifth album, Busker On The Broad Highway is a collection of 4 original tunes and 6 blues classics; Ryan recorded it all live to tape with no overdubs to capture the spirit of the music.  He and I will sit and talk about the road, the life changes and where he is today in his life.

Monkey Junk originally Sat On The Couch back on November 18, 2013 when we discussed their careers and the band and heard songs from their All Frequencies album.  This week Steve, Tony and Matt return to talk about the new release, Moon Turn Red, which was released September 25th.  We’ll find out what the guys have been up to since their last visit, check out Tuneage from the new album and find out where they are heading next.
