Today on the BeachLifestyle Radio Show, Host Neil Haley The Total Tutor will interview Olympic Legend Kerri Walsh Jennings!
Kerri Walsh Jennings
“Six feet of Sunshine”, Kerri Walsh-Jennings is considered one of the best female athletes ever to play beach volleyball. Since she first starting playing beach in 2001, Walsh and partner Misty May-Treanor have set the standard for what it takes to be the best in the sport, winning an unprecedented three-straight Olympic Gold Medals (2004, 2008, 2012). In 2012, competing together for the final time internationally, Walsh and May-Treanor dropped only one set during the London Olympics on their way to defeating fellow Americans Jennifer Kessy and April Ross in the gold medal match.
During the course of three Olympic games, that lone set in London is the only one they’ve ever dropped, having previously won 140 straight. Between 2003 and 2004, the duo put together one of the most impressive winning streaks in professional sports history; winning 89 straight matches on the AVP Tour and the international circuit. In 2007, her 20 wins (domestic and international) tied her with May-Treanor for the most wins in a single season. In 2008, the duo broke their own records by winning 112 matches in a row and 19 consecutive tournaments.
Walsh is a two-time AVP MVP (2003, 2004) and part of the Tour’s Team of the Year for five straight seasons (2004-08). She has also been named AVP Best Offensive Player in 2003. For the third straight season in 2007, she was chosen at the FIVB’s best hitter, best blocker and sportsperson in addition to collecting the Best Offensive and Most Outstanding Player awards.

Yes, grab your shades, pack your beach-towel and your sun-tan lotion as we welcome Nadine and Simone to the show - Switzerlands Olympic beach volleyball team! The Swiss national Olympic Beach Volleyball Team have trained together since the 2009 season. In June 2012 Nadine and Simone claimed their first ever FIVB SWATCH World Tour gold medal, with a win over Sara Goller and Laura Ludwig in the final of the smart Grand Slam in Rome. The Swiss pair found their rhythm early on, controlling the match from start to finish and claimed the gold medal with a 21-12 and 21-18 victory. “It is unbelievable,” Zumkehr said. “It definitely wasn’t easy. In the first set we served really, really well. It may have seemed easy, but we knew that they would come out in the second set and make it very hard and tough. “That is how it was. We were behind and we knew that it would be a lot of work, but we believed in ourselves and served well.” The pair also had success with tournament victory in the FIVB World Tour in China. There hadn't been a Swiss beach volleyball women's team on the top podium in the 18 year history of the World Tour. Additionally, the Swiss champions took home the European Championship bronze medal. We welcome them to the show!
She played college volleyball at UCLA, starting for three seasons and serving as captain for two seasons. While at UCLA, she earned All-American honors. In 1996, she started her pro beach volleyball career and competed for two seasons on the four-person circuit. She helped her team to win the title in the 1997 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships in Los Angeles. In 1999, she won the silver medal at the 1999 Beach Volleyball World Championships in Marseille (Mar-sa). She also partnered with Annett Davis on two-person events and the pair qualified for the 2000 Olympics in Sydney and placed fifth at the games. Throughout her athletic career, she has finished first 10 times in the U.S. and 2 times internationally, including 7 times on the AVP tour. In 2002, she was honored with the AVP Special Achievement Award. In 2004, she and Davis became the U.S. team with most career tournaments played together. Together with her husband, they work with Athletes in Action’s pro ministry.
In a testimony for BeyondtheUltimate.org, she said of her faith, "Everyone has something they are passionate about and for me it has always been sports. I can remember even at a very young age loving to compete, and when I was introduced to the game of volleyball in 7th grade I was hooked. Yet as great as this passion was, I became even more passionate about something else during my sophomore year in college."
"During that time I developed a passion for knowing who God really is. I used to think that God was a God of 'do's and don'ts,' but I learned that He is a God of love and that He loves me unconditionally. He loves me so much that He sent His son Jesus Christ to this earth so that I could have a relationship with Him...

From the book "Vinyl Knights" by Kenneth Howard Smith, "Merrell was eighteen years old at that time, and had been recording up the coast with a group called the Impacts. They had recorded this album called "Wipe out", surf music and stuff. The Beatles had been in the United States for almost two months now, and the Beach Boys were right up there with them. "Wipe Out" by the Surfaris was going to the top of the charts, and Merrell was telling everyone that he had wrote this song. Well, no one believed him at all. I just happened to be shopping at a local Woolworth store, and they had just received a bend full of cut-out records, and sure enough, there were ten albums from this group the Impacts on Del-Fi Records, and there was Merrell Wayne Fankhauser's name as big as life."
Join your host Wes Blackman as he welcomes Lake Worth Mayor Pam Triolo and City Manager Michael Bornstein to discuss the Lake Worth 2020 infrastructure improvement program. There is a ballot question related to this program appearing on the August 26th ballot - whether to allow the city to issue bonds totaling $63.5 million to fund the program or to not allow the city to do so. Mayor Triolo and Mr. Bornstein will review the program, tell us about upcoming opportunities to hear more about the plan and try to answer questions that we and they have heard throughout the community on the program.
Here, Mayor Triolo reviews events prior to the election where you can learn more:
"If you still have not been a part of a LW 2020 informational session presented by the city, you still have 3 more chances! Friday night at 7pm they'll be a meeting at the LW Playhouse. Saturday at 5pm the City will be presenting at the College Park Neighborhood Association meeting at First Congregational Church. Sunday at Noon they'll be a 2020 presentation at the Wimbley Gym- 1515 Wingfield Street off of 12th Avenue South- no need for a sitter as they'll be hamburgers, hotdogs, soft drinks and activities for the kids! The vote is this Tuesday folks. No matter what side of the issue you are on, please make sure you get the facts first. There's no need to guess or wonder or speculate. You will be able to ask questions directly to city staff at all of these meetings. And as an aside, please be respectful and kind to one another. Whatever happens, we have a lot of work to do and it always works better when we do it together!"
On this week's Riding The Wave, we're joined by Queens Borough President Melinda Katz. She will discuss the latest and most crucial issues facing the peninsula with host Mark Healey, the Managing Editor of The Wave, Rockaway's newspaper since 1893.
