Former WWE/AWA announcer Ken Resnick joins us live tonight!!!

    in Wrestling

Ken was doing sports on the six and ten o'clock news for the NBC affiliate in Rochester, and he hosted an interview segment for a celebrity golf tournament. Verne Gagne was there, and he interviewed him. At the party afterward, Verne and Ken talked. Then, two weeks later, Ken received a phone call at the station. It was Verne, and he wanted to meet for lunch. Gene Okerlund was going to work for the WWF and Verne offered Ken a job. Resnick accepted, and it turned out that he would have some pretty big shoes to fill with the departure of Okerlund, who had created an indelible persona of his own in the AWA. Resnick credits Blackjack Lanza, with being a teacher and supporter in both the AWA and later the then-WWF, helping him get hired there in 1986. Ken met Vince and talked for quite a while

When he went to the WWF, he learned so much about production and preparation. In all the time I was in the AWA, we never had a formal production meeting. In the WWF, we had extensive meetings. They were producing numerous programs each week, and were trying to motivate the viewer to make a certain purchase, and the preparation and focus were unbelievable."

As he reflects on his time in wrestling, Resnick is grateful, and humbled

    SCW Radio (Ep. 186 - #SaveSCW)

    in Entertainment

    Paypal donations: southcarolinawrestling@yahoo.com

Over the last six years a local independent wrestling company has put smiles on faces of children and entertained adults. SCW Entertainment has raised funds and donations for Burton Center for disabilities and special needs, Toys for Tots, United Way, Red Cross, Autism awareness, Food Bank of Greenwood County, Coronaca & Waterloo fire departments, and several more. SCW has also worked with at risk youth in several different endeavors. More recently, SCW has lost ownership of it's wrestling ring and has been hit with fines that occurred beyond the company's control. We are reluctantly asking for help to keep the doors open in 2016 and beyond. No ring, no show... so we must purchase a new wrestling ring. Secondly, we cannot hold an event in this state while said fines are looming. With all this considered, we are setting a goal of $3,000. We know this may sound like a lot but if everyone chips in a little, we can do this! Let's keep wrestling in Greenwood, let's keep SCW Entertainment alive!

2D Sports Radio Presents PWR SLAM! Revisits Georgia Champonship Wrestling

    in Wrestling

Tonight PWR SLAM! goes back to the early days of cable TV when Ted Turner put his shows on at 5 and 35 after the hour "so you can see how boring everyone else's stuff is then come watch MY shows". In those days, the whole nation was starting to turn to something called Super 17 on Saturday night starting at 6:05 P.M. Eastern for a little show called "Georgia Championship Wrestling". At that time, the Georgia territory, owned and run by Ole Anderson, was part of the National Wrestling Alliance when it was still a powerhouse and part of the Big 3 along with Verne Gagne's AWA and a little promotion then run by Vince McMahon Sr. called the World Wrestling Federation.

The roster was one of the top groups of its time, from the enhancement guys such as George South, Alabama Jr. Heavyweight Champion Mike Jackson and The Mulkey Brothers to the top stars, NWA World Champion Nature Boy Ric Flair, Michael Hayes and Terry Gordy, who were feuding at the time, Tommy "Wildfire" Rich and many more. Among that group were two good old Southern boys who definately were "rasslers", Joel Deaton and Bob Cook.

Joel Deaton was working as a personal trainer when Lars Anderson took him under his wing and trained him for an in ring career. Aftera short stint in Anderson's promotion Joel left for his first stint at GCW. He not only wrestled as Joel Deaton, he put on a mask and wrestled as Thunderfoot, where he was managed by the legendary James J. Dillon. Joel has been with us on our Promoter's Roundtable and was part of our Anniversary, but this will be his first featured appearance.

Joining Joel will be another stalwart from those Georgia days, Bob Cook. Bob is also a protege of Professor Boris Malenko so his heritage is stellar. We will discuss his beginnings in the ring, wrestling new WWE Hall Of Fame member Sting and donning a familiar mask.

Questions will be taken by Skype or (347) 826-9418.
