This week on Autism Spectrum Radio we will discuss a question that concerns all parents and caregiver at some point: What are the challenges and opportunities as children with autism become adolescents and adults? The specific nature of how to manage these changes and the best way to prepare for the future will be the focus of this episode. Join us as we explore the different facets of how families and society need to prepare for a maturing community of individuals with autism. We are extremely excited to welcome a special guest to the show, Dr. Peter Gerhardt. Dr. Gerhardt is an expert on the use of ABA therapy in support of adolescents and adults with autism spectrum disorders.
Dr. Gerhardt has more than 30 years’ experience utilizing the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis in support of adolescents and adults with autism spectrum disorders in educational, employment, residential and community-based settings. He has authored and co-authored articles and book chapters on the needs of adolescents and adults with ASD and has presented nationally and internationally on this topic. He serves as Chairman of the Scientific Council for the Organization for Autism Research, is on the Editorial Board of Behavior Analysis in Practice and on numerous professional advisory boards, including the Autism Society of America. Dr. Gerhardt received his doctorate from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey’s Graduate School of Education.
Hello World my name is Miyah Sundermeyer and I would like to welcome you to my latest blog series. For most people who live on the Autism spectrum making friends is a really big challenge. Most people in our society appear to be friendly with us but often refuse to join in on our social activities. Like adults, children and adolescents on the spectrum, a neurotypical will often use hints and inferences when they are not interested.

Preparing with a child or family member with special needs is not a cut and dry situation, how you prepare is directly linked to the needs of the family member you are preparing with. Family members that are elderly, disabled or have autism all require different needs on a daily basis.
Patrick of SurvivalatHome.com was good enough to be on the show this week with Lisa and I, he has a daughter Maggi that has special needs and gives us some incite about what life is like Preparing with a special needs child.
Patrick recently wrote an article titled “How to Be Prepared with a Special Needs Child” that also has some good information.

Hi, My name is Richie Jewell. I'm 22 years old and I have autism since being diagnosed at the age of 2 1/2.
Currently, i work at a local library in Beacon, NY to get some money. Outside of that, I'm a writer, motivational speaker and world/autism advocate to reach out people and raise their spirits. As of right now, I'm writing a book now titled This is Me: Life with Autism, which discusses my struggles and triumphs with my disability throughout my life. I do speeches at public places such as schools and libraries to raise awareness of autism, world problems and my struggles with my disability. Every day, there will be new challenges that are gonna confront me but I will get stronger and more confident as I conquered them. I always live by a quote made by Jim Henson. And i quote: "Life is meant to be fun, joyous, and fulfilling. May each of yours be that - having each of you as a child of mine has certainly been one of the good things in my life. Know that I've always loved each of you with an eternal, bottomless love. A love that has nothing to do with each other, for I feel my love for each of you is total and all-encompassing. Please watch out for each other and love and forgive everybody. It’s a good life, enjoy it." In order to be successful, i could try give the best advice which follows: Reach into your heart and soul to discover your talent. Sometimes, people's talents fade away and you lose something special so, hold on to it. If your talent or idea helps you, then let it set you free from the obstacles that are currently destroying your spirit. Follow your dreams and heart by listening to that “whisper” inside your head speaking to you. If you listen to it, you'll go somewhere.
