Chapter 6, Music for Jesus Lyrics of Freedom; Chapter 7 Flight and Revolt, Runaways and Maroons
Michael Row the Boat Ashore
"Michael, Row the Boat Ashore" is an African-american spiritual. It was first noted during the American Civil War at St. Helena Island, one of the Sea Islands of South Carolina, USA.
The song was sung by former slaves whose owners had abandoned the island before the Union navy arrived to enforce a blockade. Charles Pickard Ware, an abolitionist and Harvard graduate who had come to supervise the plantations on St. Helena Island wrote the song down in music notation as he heard the freedmen sing.
The lyric describes the simple crossing of the River Jordan with macabre undertones provided by reference to trumpets, eternal life and unknown lands. Despite its deathly connotations the song is affirming, a celebration of faith under oppression.
“This book will force many readers to reexamine their assumptions about American history… Young readers will be fascinated and better informed for having experienced this book,” wrote School Library Journal. Striking photographs highlight this unknown heritage.”

Author Thatcher C. Nalley joins me on the Indie Books Show this week to talk about Letters from the Looney Bin and her other books.
In the late 1970s the Emerson Rose Asylum became completely abandoned - all the patients, doctors, staff vanished and were never seen again. The events circling this mass exodus have been one of the most baffling disappearances in history...until now. For hidden deep inside a tattered asylum mattress a stack of bundled letters were found. These letters, all addressed to the pseudonym Dr. Quill, and all written by the patients as they document the final days of the Emerson Rose Asylum.
Tune in Friday at 11AM EST or listen to the archive.

This is our Sunday Sermon and today V.R. is preaching on "The Flying Scotsman” where he unpacks some insights into the Scottish Patron Saint of Andrew. This sermon was preached in Scotland, on the eve of the referendum for independence in the Kingdom of Fife, the constituency which finally pushed the ‘Better Together’ campaign of a NO to independence, across the deciding line. What can Andrew teach us about strength courage and perseverance together with all the associated benefits? Does this ancient union of nations called the United Kingdom, and Scotland in particular, need to see the rising of some more strong armed men of the Lord? You Betcha!

We're back! This week your favorite geeky ladies review "The Maze Runner" starring the kid from MTV's Teenwolf abomination, the kid from "We're The Millers" and that kid from Game of Thrones. Based on the YA novel of the same name, "The Maze Runner" is the story of Thomas, a boy who awakens in an elevator and is deposited in a Lord of The Flies type compound filled with other mildly dirty, yet impossibly well-coifed teenage boys. The boys can't remember anything about their previous lives (except their names) or how they arrived in "The Glade". They only know their one shot at escape is through the imposing, monster-filled Maze that surrounds their compound. Tune in to find out if this sci-fi action flick is worth your hard earned money or if you should save your $14 and just read the book.

Imagine being in middle school, a 12 year old aspiring writer. You become brave and show your Librarian your very first full manuscript. The reaction you receive is less than supportive. Shandy Kurth was that 12 year old. I for one am thankful that she did not let this occurance stop her dreams from happening. We will touch base on how she overcame that hurdle and talk about her journey to publishing five books to date! We will discuss how this author finds time to be out in the work force, a wife, a mother and then finds the time to be an author as well.
