The Catholic Geek: Karina Fabian and Becky Geist on audio books and Zombies

    in Books

On October 18, in time for Halloween, join host Declan Finn (author, Honor at Stake) as he discusses the the return of Karina Fabian's awesome heroine, Neeta Lyffe: Zombie Exterminator. Join us as she and book reader Becky Geist discuss creating the audio book for the second Neeta novel, I Left My Brains in San Francisco.  Neeta Lyffe is the best zombie novel you have ever read, and if you don't read it ... well, there's no reason not to, really.

The first novel combined the best of zombie hunting with the worst of reality television.  Now, I Left My Brains in San Francisco deals with the best of hunting zombies with the worst of political stupidity.  You will die laughing, and then come back from the grave for more.

Selena's life isn't turning out to be the fairy tale she imagined as a kid.

That hope seemed to vanish long ago when her dad kicked her and her mom out of the house. This summer might finally hold the chance of a new beginning for Selena ... but having to live with her snobby cousin in Lake Lure, NC while waiting for her mom to get out of rehab wasn't how Selena was planning on spending her summer. She soon begins to wonder why she committed to give up her "bad habits" for this.

Things don't seem too bad, though. Especially when Selena gains the attention of the cute neighbor next door. But when her best friend back home in Brooklyn desperately needs her, a secret that's been hidden from Selena for years is revealed, and when she becomes a target for one of her cousin's nasty pranks, she finds herself having to face the scars from her past and the memories that come along with them. Will she follow her mom's example in running away, or trust that God still has a fairy tale life written just for her?

An Atheist in Heaven: The Ultimate Evidence for Life After Death?~

The book is a case of unexplained phenomena, including chemical evidence, that is an ultimate challenge to scientifically-minded skeptics. Forrest J Ackerman (1916-2008) was a world famous futurist, author and a pioneering promoter of science fiction books and films. As an atheist, Mr. Ackerman did not believe in life after death. However, he promised friends that if he were wrong, he would try to drop them a line. The is the unabridged true story of precisely what happened. For over six years, data has accumulated that Mr. Ackerman continues to communicate, with over 100 incidents that include physical chemical evidence studied at two universities. This has left top science professors in fields from chemistry to psychology completely baffled, and in some cases, plagued by unexplainable incidents themselves. The book includes Paul Davids' sworn personal testimony and incredible story of bizarre contacts from the mentor whose deep friendship he valued for half a century It also includes in-depth chemical analysis (a 3 year study) of an extraordinarily mysterious ink and ink message that continues to mystify scientists, and also studies from state of the art sensors used with computer software, apparently successfully, to attempt getting responses from spirits, including the late Mr. Ackerman. This is a companion work to Mr. Davids' feature documentary from NBCUniversal called "THE LIFE AFTER DEATH PROJECT," but a previous viewing of the film is not essential, and the book certainly stands alone.

MORE HEAVEN: BECAUSE EVERY CHILD IS SPECIAL~

Based on a true story, More Heaven: Because Every Child is Special about six children with autism and special needs and their teacher who gives them a chance at learning and life. Despite challenges and a lack of support, Miss Tina Randolph's commitment to reach, teach, and inspire these children is unwavering.

By accepting their uniqueness and participating in their private fantasy world, while at the same time engaging them in the real world, she eventually succeeds. Tina, her teacher's aide, Kaye, and the children mount a tireless, daily battle to shift the tide toward the acceptance of people who are different.

The experiment, begun in chaotic, uncharted waters, bridges the gap of understanding and paves the way for the inclusionary practices of education and society's acceptance of children and adults with special needs. This is a road that continues to need paving, making the messages inMore Heaven: Because Every Child Is Special equally relevant today.

The book evolved from an experiment in the Philadelphia school system in the late 1970's in response to the 1975 Education for the Handicapped Act, ruling that public schools in the US educate all children with disabilities, despite their severity.
Previously, many of these special needs children were kept at home-isolated and denied access to the mainstream. More Heaven is a powerful story of compassion, determination, disappointment, triumph, and love.
