Dr. Stanton Peele on overcoming an addiction with values and self-determination

    in Psychology

Amy Alkon's Advice Goddess Radio: "Nerd Your Way To A Better Life!" with the best brains in science.

*"Best Of" replay for Thanksgiving weekend.

Stanton Peele points out that most people recover from addictions on their own -- without AA or rehab, and what makes the difference is values, not biology.

On tonight’s show, he’ll debunk many of the myths in addiction treatment -- especially the notion that addiction is a “disease” people are powerless to overcome. That defeatest message is especially counterproductive to overcoming addiction, and it’s been supported with bad science and hearsay. Join us tonight to hear what solid science says about how addiction or bad habits can be overcome -- to the point where people are not just going cold-turkey off some substance or behavior till their next relapse, but where they develop meaningful ways of coping that no longer have them turning to their old crutch.

Peele’s book we’ll be discussing is Recover! Stop Thinking Like an Addict and Reclaim Your Life with The PERFECT Program.

Join me and all my fascinating guests every Sunday, 7-8 p.m. PT, 10-11 p.m. ET, at blogtalkradio.com/amyalkon or subscribe on iTunes or Stitcher.

Please order my new book, the science-based and funny "Good Manners For Nice People Who Sometimes Say F*ck," -- only about $11 at Amazon.

The ORACLE Speaks With ... YOU!

    in Spirituality

I am thankful for the breath I breathe, for the tears I shed, for the joy in my heart and for YOU in my life. I have been blessed with so much. Oh to be sure, there many "things" that I want; that I have had before, on more than one occasion. Then I didn't really appreciate the "things" I had. One thing for sure, I appreciated the "poeple" in my life; my husband, daughters, family, friends and fans. Oh, I am thankful for so much. Especially for you, those of you who listen to the show every Sunday. Thank you. Thank you G-D.

This Week's Theme from The ORACLE's Heart:

I am led by the spirit to share a word of caution: beware the evil that lurks with-in. It's manifestation oft times can not be seen by the eye, yet, instead, by the sense that all is not right. Heed that sense. It is the guidance of Adjusters who know the path you must lead to your greater knowing. Trust that instinct for knowing the TRUTH.

A Special Tribute to Retired Congresswoman, ambassador Diane E. Watson. I simply call her Cousin Diane. We'll be honoring her at the Zen Lounge on Ventura Blvd., just West of Lankersheim. 3 PM PST. Come meet a living legend and have a good time at the same time. Live music, awesome food and great company.
