Vice President Joe Biden spoke to members of the United Auto Worker Union, addressing what he called a "war on labor." The issue is relevant to Chattanooga because UAW officials are in the middle of an organizing effort at the Volkswagen plant. Biden also said that right-wing business interests are trying to dismantle labor unions, which is related to growing income inequality in the United States, according to The Huffington Post."This is a concerted, full-throated, well-organized, well-financed, well-thought-out, long-term effort waging a war on labor's house," Biden told The Huffington Post.He also said that President Barack Obama's administration would fight for collective bargaining before the Supreme Court.Look at Harris v. Quinn, the case before the Supreme Court. There’s a hell of a lot at stake. The president and I, through the solicitor general, came in on the side of the unions on the oral arguments and finally had an amicus brief, because we know that collective bargaining is the bedrock of our economy.NOOGA.com

In June 2013, Walmart Inc. filed a lawsuit against Gene Lantz, the North Texas chapter of JWJ, the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, and the Organization United for Respect at Walmart (OURWalmart), alleging trespass. It seeks a permanent injunction against Lantz and the other defendants, as well as less than $100,000 in damages.Lantz has been a dedicated labour activist since the 1970s. In addition to his duties as retiree chairman of the local 848, does a labour-oriented radio program the "Workers Beat" on KNON 89.3 and has long been affiliated with the local Jobs With Justice chapter, writing about workplace issues.
May Day, which began at the historic Haymarket Square site in 19th century Chicago with workers demanding an eight-hour day, is now the most-celebrated holiday on the planet. In the Indonesian capital Jakarta hundreds of thousands of protesting workers condemned the government for hiking fuel prices .In Manilla, the capital of the Philippines, meanwhile, thousands of exploited contract workers marched through the streets demanding the right to unionize. The Iraqi Communist Party marched in huge May Day protests in Baghdad.More than 1.5 million turned out at 16 demonstrations and rallies in Moscow. In Greece, the country ground to a halt as almost everyone joined in a 24-hour general strike against austerity. Trains and ferries were stalled at their moorings as seamen walked off the job.
Frances Fox Piven, the City University of New York sociologist best known for her work on the Poor People's Movements (which led to her being centre piece Glenn Beck the Right-wing attack dog), turned her attention last week to an oft-repeated question: "Can American labor recover?" Her short answer was might be: Maybe (I hope so), but not on its own, and not without a push from outside.
Piven's take on the labor movement is not peculiar to her alone, but rather is emblematic of a section of the left, academic and otherwise. Which I guess is not surprising, given the distance between the world of the university and the world of working people.
In any case, the left, including the academic left, should be knowledgeable about the labor movement. It should hail and join its initiatives.
This doesn't preclude criticism, but it should be done in a constructive, unifying, and partisan way. It should be always mindful not only of the very difficult circumstances in which labor fights, but also the necessary role that it will play in any progressive and socialist thrust in U.S. politics.Sam Webb People's World
Labor Day is a national holiday set aside to honour the American Worker, however, in 21st Century America there seems to be little support for the average working Joe and Jane in the halls of Congress or state capitals. How did our well-paid unionized workforce become an endangered species in the US? Jerry Pippin looks at the plight the forgotten Americans, the working person. In a political climate of "market forces" instead of "work forces" will we continue to see a decline in the standard of living of the middle class?

The Tea Parties are a commericalised political club form by Washington lobbyist and professional GOP operatives with funding from likes of the Koch Brothers Inc.
Their brand of patriotism is Anti-American.
“The tea party has got technical dominance in their ability to put together a leaderless group that is in the political cloud, so to speak, and what [Jones] does is take the next step after that.”
Van Jones would like to start his own version of the Tea Party. The Left still also doesn’t get that there’s absolutely nothing stopping them from going to existing Tea Party groups and making their case that those groups should adopt the causes that the Left likes. There’s quite a bit stopping the Left from succeeding, mind you - but that’s a different issue; the point is that as long as the Left keeps telling themselves that the other guys are somehow not authentic, the Left is going to keep messing up their imitations* Redstate
