I THINK I NEED A SHRINK! HOW ABOUT YOU?
Too often, for Black People, the thought of talking to a psychiatrist carries with it some kind of social stigma. The perception is that one must be "crazy" if there is a need to seek professional counseling. so we suffer in silence or worse, act out, with no control of our emotional state. There is help available if we want it and there are people who look like us that can help.
Dr. Aikiesha Shelby is one such person. She was born and raised in Chicago IL and is the youngest of 8. She is the first doctor in her family, having received her bachelors and medical degrees at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She did her 1st year internship in OB/Gyn at Vanderbilt but changed her mind and pursued General Psychiatry resedency followed by Child Adolescent Fellowship both at the University of Louisville. She finished her traing in Sept 2011 and started her practice in the Daytona Beach area in June 2013. Dr. Shelby is a part of what we have termed the YOUNG LIONS. Young, African American professionals who encourage us just simply by being. the doctors, lawyers, mathematicians, Scientists, and other professionals who let us know that the struggle, though not over, has been worth the effort.
