There are no reliable statistics to asses how prevalent the syndrome actually has become. The exact cause of Munchausen syndrome by proxy is unknown although it is thought to have both biological na dpsychological factors. Some theories suggest a history of abuse, neglect, or early stressors can trigger an MSP episode.

( MSP) is a type of factitious disorder in which a person acts as if an individual he or she is caring for has a physical or mental illness when the person is not really sick. Munchausen's by Proxy can be related to physical illness, mental illness and even psychic, energetic issues. People with Munchausen Syndrome assume the role of a sick person indirectly by producing or lying about illness in another person under their care usually a child under the age of six years of age, cases have been reported in older children, youth and even adults. MSP most often occurs with mothers but can occur with fathers, who intentionally harm or make up non- existent symptoms in their children to get the attnetion given to the family of someone who is sick. A person with MSP uses the many hospitalizzations as a way to earn praise from others for their devotion to the child's care, often using the sick child as a means for developing a relationship with the doctor or other health care provider. Often people with MSp exaggerate the child's symptoms. Diagnostic tests ( contaminating a urine sample) can be altered, falsifying medical records and or history, inducing symptoms through poisoning, suffocating, starving or causing infections or wounds.
