This week on the “Global Voice” I will be interviewing Tara Barrows, Volunteer and Event Coordinator of the Monarch School in San Diego, California. The Monarch School is a truly unique school model that educates homeless children Grades K-12. It provides them with a challenging academic program and helps restore their hopes and dreams for a better future. The administrators and staff are passionate about what they do and are committed to improving the lives of their students. The Academic Performance and Psycho-social testing outcomes of the students are a testimonial to the success being achieved by the students. The school remains open 51 weeks out of the school year and offers the students meals, snacks, coaching, counseling and sports and arts opportunities. Volunteers make a significant contribution to the school by helping with tutoring, transportation, food distribution and special events. The graduates who go on to attend college continue to have the help and support they need to succeed with their education. The Monarch School offers them scholarship opportunities, tutorial assistance and mentorship. It is a remarkable prototype that currently serves 125 students at a time and touches the lives of between 400 and 500 students each year. They are currently in the process of looking to expand their facility to serve more students.
