Susan attended Mississippi University for Women where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. It was at the “W” that Susan met her future husband, James Rish a student at University of Mississippi in Oxford. Susan found herself traveling as her husband completed his medical training.
In support of her husband’s career she became active in the University of Mississippi Medical School Student Spouse Alliance, and later, the University of Arkansas Resident Spouse Alliance. It was in Little Rock that she received her first introduction to organized medicine while working for the Arkansas Medical Society. It was a combination of this work experience and her husband’s passion for medicine that spurred Susan’s interest in continuing to be an advocate for the Family of Medicine.
