Developing a New “Social Contract” Between Students and Teachers

Join our discussion about what a “social contract” is and how it is developed for adult learners to successfully communicate and socialize with others. In our present educational systems, we have many so-called contracts that address positive behavioral supports in the kindergarten thru high school classrooms. However, when teachers, counselors and adult learners/students from varying ethnic and cultural groups are engaged in the classroom or workplace environment a new form of social contract must be developed and implemented differently. The staff of White Apple Institute encourage listeners to call in to our show and share how they have developed social contracts (written or oral) that help us communicate and socialize for success in the classroom and the workplace.

Defining a “Healthy Attitude” in the Culture We Live In

Participate in a discussion about how a student’s “culture” defines a “healthy attitude” about school and work. The staff of White Apple Institute help listeners from all over the United States and other countries understand the definition of “culture” and encourage comments from students, teachers, counselors, and parents. Professor Applewhite discusses President Obama’s speech at the NAACP’s 100th Annual Convention and the impact he made on cultural and ethnic issues in education. Co-host Nazim Rashid will elaborate on how the “street and prescription” drug cultures negatively influence student attitudes about dropping out of school or returning to school/college.

Developing a “Healthy Attitude” about School and Work

What does a “healthy attitude” look like? Professor Applewhite, host, and Nazim Rashid, co-host of the Student2Teacher2Student© , Internet radio show, ask their listeners to define what they call a “healthy attitude”. We encourage listeners to call in, share their views about what a “healthy attitude” looks like, and listen to strategies to develop this way of life. It is critical that our attitude about being “healthy” is accepted in the culture and society we live in. At White Apple Institute, our focus is on setting “realistic” goals with a healthy attitude that must be maintained for success in the classroom and the workplace. Adult learners diagnosed with a mental or physical disability does not necessarily mean they are “unhealthy” or do not possess a healthy attitude. More often than we may expect, a person with a disability may lead a very successful life and maintain an even healthier attitude about school, work, and life, than those who are not diagnosed with a disability. The initial screening and assessment at White Apple Institute helps potential students and teachers clarify their purpose, abilities, and goals in a changing world. Teachers, as well as students, deal with “burn out” issues that negatively affect their health and attitudes towards each other and the educational systems they work and learn in. We look forward to more feedback from employers, counselors, parents, and other interested listeners around the United States and abroad to improve our perspectives about being prepared for success in a global economy, diagnosed as “disabled”, or not!

Faith in Our Educational Systems-Part Two

Join Professor (“Apple”) Applewhite in a discussion of the issues surrounding adult age students with physical, mental, and learning disabilities who complete educational programs, during or after incarceration, with the hope and faith that a J-O-B is attainable. However, the fact is they face an even harsher reality than our 2009 high school and college graduates in these challenging economic times. We invite students and employers to discuss how they address “the BOXES” on employment and scholarship applications that ask about their criminal histories. White Apple Institute, sponsor of the Student2Teacher2Student© radio broadcast, hopes to instill faith in our students, teachers, parents, employers, and all interested persons, as we speak about ways to minimize recidivism and prepare adult learners in this population to achieve practical and realistic pathways. Our radio show is designed to stimulate conversations between “adult learners with disabilities or various at-risk issues” and “teachers, counselors, and employers” to improve success in the classroom and within the workplace. We encourage listeners to acknowledge that although “life-long learning” is critical for “life-long success” we cannot ignore that most students engage in postsecondary education to improve their future “ECONOMIC” status.
