When working with people in the process of psycho"therapy" the professional must avoid judging his clients in such a way as to dehumanize and/or demonize them. The professional must be aware if the client is treating the professional as some god-like, all knowing being with magical powers. Transference is the term used for the distorted perceptions of the client toward the professional and countertransference the distortions to be found in the professional's failure to understand his/her clients. The distortions preventing individuals from seeing others as simply human beings with differences can derive from the personalities of those in our families or from the cultural groups with whom we identify. Trump bridged the gap between himself and the group that ultimately supported him, Hillary and those who supported he did not. "We" lost an election because we did not bridge that cultural gap.
