I'm a pretty even keel Mets fan. I try to be honest without being overly negative or blindly positive. In fact, nothing irks me more than the knee-jerk reaction (which, given that Fan is short for FANATIC, is admittedly irrational on my part). You'll learn this about me as I post more regularly, but I start tonight with a quick, interesting tidbit, given recent talk about the Mets' prospects.
For those who deride the Mets' system, here's a bone for you.
John Lannan of Long Beach, Long Island, just threw a complete game shutout against the Mets. He's thrown 18 straight scoreless innings against the Mets, and came into tonight's game with a 3.64 ERA...better than all Mets starters except Santana.
Keep in mind, he played 30 minutes from Shea in high school.
Lannan was taken in the 11th round of the 2005 draft. The Mets' last pick before Lannan in that draft? A kid named Courtney Billingsley, of Dayton, Ohio. An outfielder, Billingsley hit .184 in two seasons in Rookie ball before the Mets cut him loose.
Of course, lots of teams missed the boat on Lannan. But that he's a local guy, for some reason, irritates me just a bit more.
Enjoy the brief entry...I'll ramble on plenty in others
