    Are We in a Recession? Ecommerce is Thriving Even in a Slow Economy and You Can Join in the Fun!

    Lately. we all tend to hear conversations around the water cooler at work, on televisions while pumping gas, or from shoppers at the grocery store that all talk about how we're currently in a recession. The slowing of our economy is very real and effects everything in our daily lives, but is it a little misleading to over-generalize and say that we're all in a recession and are doomed?

    Well, when it comes to making a living and earning money, I think it depends on how you look at things. As unemployment rates continue to rise, gas prices soar into the stratosphere, and home values drop like crazy it's easy for us to be depressed about our countries' current state and feel like we're trapped. For the lucky rich of the nation, they are hardly bothered by all of this and have found new ways to continue making money that are actually thriving and growing year after year.

    So, what's this resource that is largely untapped by the general population? Ecommerce! This secret recession killer isn't anything new, you've used it yourself, and know tons of people who've done the same. The Entrepreneurs and independent research firms of the country have tracked eCommerce results for numerous years now and have shown a huge increase in money being exchanged for tangible or information products on the Internet. Not only that, but sales over the Internet are expected to keep growing at stunning rates for years to come.

    It makes sense why eCommerce is continuing to explode on our online world. Confidence in our malls and stores is lower because of the extra costs we incur at the gas pump and time it takes away from our busy lives. The world is a hectic place and most of us are tired of dealing with annoying sales messages or salespeople all vying for our attention. Nowadays, the consumer has more power and control than ever when researching a product and doesn't even have to leave home to do it.

    In addition, you can find products that are made by other people and can sell them through what's known as affiliate links. Everyone has some form of information they're an expert on and, in that case, you can greatly benefit by writing your own eBook.

    In today's highly competitive internet universe, the importance of attracting highly targeted traffic to your website cannot be overemphasized. Routing web traffic to your site can be your only means of survival, especially in the cutthroat world of eCommerce. Getting a high search engine ranking can be very difficult. Fortunately, there is plethora of website promotion strategies you can use to drive traffic to your website.

    There are a wide variety of strategies you can adapt, from paid advertising to affiliate marketing. However, most of these techniques require payment. Nevertheless, there are ways to promote your website and increase your web traffic without spending anything. Writing articles is one of the best web site promotion strategies you can use, and they can be very effective.

    How, you may ask, can writing articles help improve your web traffic? Here are the top seven ways in which it can help explode your business.

    1.Reach more people

    When you write good articles, it would be a shame not to share them with other people. You can post your articles in your website or you can submit them to other sites such as e-zines and online publishers.

    By submitting your articles to these sites, you give exposure not only to your ideas but also to your website.     (Robert's Note - I would include an 8th reason to use Article Marketing - Compile your articles into a BOOK! I wrote my first book this way it it launched my career as a writer.     In this highly competitive world, excellent credibility and trust may be the only things you need to attract new customers or make loyal patrons out of your existing customers.     Speed up slow PC - Squeeze every last drop of performance out of your XP

    With faster machines cropping up almost daily, the life span of a midrange PC is a little more than two years of service. Physically, the computer you bought a few years ago is just as sound as any new piece of hardware. Ideally, it could probably last you a decade or two--as long as you didn't add any new software or surf the Net. Realistically, that's not likely to be the case. Instead of buying a new computer, optimize your present one.

    The following are 11 things that Chip Manufacturers and PC Retailers don't want you to know or how to perform. Following these advices will drastically increase your PC performance and help you regain your sanity while saving loads of money. And, if your PC is years old and can't afford to upgrade yet, you will be able to squeeze out some more juice out of the old thing!

    1. Disable file indexing - This is a tiny service that uses a great deal of RAM and induces much disk thrashing. Your system instantly becomes more responsive. Here's how: First, doubleclick the My Computer icon. Then, right-click on the C: Drive, then hit Properties. Uncheck "Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching." Next, apply changes to "C: subfolders and files," and click OK.

    2. Zap the Windows Prefetch folder every week - Windows XP can "prefetch" portions of data and applications that are frequently loaded. This allows processes appear to start faster when requested the user. Over time, the prefetch folder overwhelms with references to files and applications no longer in use. Guess what happens? Windows XP wastes time and grinds to a halt by pre-loading obsolete data. It helps you gain some performance on your XP Professional to periodically empty the prefetch folder.

    The prefetch folder resides on your local hard disk, under the Windows folder.
    %systemroot%\prefetch
    -or-
    X:\windows\prefetch

    Where X is the drive letter where you have Windows installed. Either path will get you to your local system. The second path is for those who have the default installation on the most commonly used drive letter, C:\

    3. Optimize Display Settings - Windows XP can look sexy but displaying all the visual items can waste system resources. Kill unnecessary animations, and nix active desktop.

    Here's how to do it:
    1) Go to Start
    2) Click Settings
    3) Click Control Panel
    4) Click System
    5) Click Advanced tab
    6) In the Performance tab click Settings
    7) Leave only the following ticked:
    (1) Show shadows under menus
    (2) Show shadows under mouse pointer
    (3) Show translucent selection rectangle
    (4) Use drop shadows for icons labels on the desktop
    (5) Use visual styles on windows and buttons

    Feel free to play around with the options offered here, as nothing you can change will alter the stability of the computer - only its responsiveness.

    4. Remove the Desktop Picture - Your desktop background consumes a fair amount of memory and can slow the loading time of your system. Removing it will improve performance.

    1) Right click on Desktop and select Properties
    2) Select the Desktop tab
    3) In the Background window select None
    4) Click Ok

    5. Remove Fonts for Speed - Zap extra fonts fonts installed on their computer. Fonts, especially TrueType fonts, use quite a bit of system resources. The more fonts they have, the more lethargic the system will become. Anything over 300 fonts tax the system and slow down load times- especially graphic apps. For optimal performance, trim your fonts down to just those that you need to use on a daily basis and fonts that applications may require.

    1) Open Control Panel
    2) Open Fonts folder
    3) Move fonts you don't need to a temporary directory (e.g. C:\FONTBKUP?) just in case you need or want to bring a few of them back. The more fonts you uninstall, the more system resources you will gain.

    6. Speedup Folder Browsing - You may have noticed that every time you open My Computer to browse folders that there is a slight delay. This is because Windows XP automatically searches for network files and printers every time you open Windows Explorer.

    To fix this and to increase browsing significantly:
    1) Open My Computer
    2) Click on Tools menu
    3) Click on Folder Options
    4) Click on the View tab.
    5) Un-check the Automatically search for network folders and printers check box
    6) Click Apply
    7) Click Ok
    8) Reboot your computer

    To prevent a single Windows Explorer window tanking up takes the rest of your OS down, you can launch separate folder windows in multi processes. Open My Computer, hit on Tools, then Folder Options. Click on the View tab. Scroll down to "Launch folder windows in a separate process," and enable this option.

    7. Disable Performance Counters - Windows XP has a performance monitor utility which monitors several areas of your PC's performance. These utilities take up system resources so disabling is a good idea.

    To disable:
    1) download and install the Extensible Performance Counter List
    2) Then select each counter in turn in the 'Extensible performance counters' window and clear the 'performance counters enabled' checkbox at the bottom button below

    8. Optimize Your Pagefile - Windows XP sizes the page file to about 1.5X the amount of actual physical memory by default. While this is good for systems with smaller amounts of memory (under 512MB) it is unlikely that a typical XP desktop system will ever need 1.5 X 512MB or more of virtual memory. If you have less than 512MB of memory, leave the page file at its default size. If you have 512MB or more, change the ratio to 1:1 page file size to physical memory size.

    1) Right click on My Computer and select Properties
    2) Select the Advanced tab
    3) Under Performance choose the Settings button
    4) Select the Advanced tab again and under Virtual Memory select Change
    5) Highlight the drive containing your page file and make the initial Size of the file the same as the Maximum Size of the file.

    9. Improve Memory Usage - PC Washer improves the performance of your computer by optimizing the disk cache, memory and a number of other settings.

    Once Installed:
    1) Click the 'Tools' from the left menu
    2) Select 'Memory Booster' in the tools list. A new window named 'PC Turbo Memory' will popup.
    3) Click Defragment button in the new window.
    4) Exit the program. That's all.

    10. Disable unnecessary services - Windows XP loads services you will never need. To determine which services you can disable for your client, visit the Black Viper site for ideal Windows XP configurations.

    * Computer Browser
    * Error Reporting Service
    * Help and Support
    * Indexing Service
    * IPSEC Services
    * Messenger
    * NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing
    * Network DDE
    * Network DDE DSDM
    * Performance Logs and Alerts
    * Portable Media Serial Number
    * QOS RSVP
    * Help Session Manager
    * Remote Registry
    * Secondary Logon
    * Server
    * Smart Card
    * Smart Card Helper
    * SSDP Discovery Service
    * System restore Service
    * TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper
    * Uninterruptible Power Supply
    * Universal Plug and Play Device Host
    * WebClient
    * Windows time
    * Wireless Zero Configuration
    * WMI Performance Adapter

    11. Disconnect USB devices you aren't using - When Windows starts, it must load all the drivers for the devices connected to your computer. If you have many devices connected to the USB ports, such as printers, scanners, cameras and hard drives that you don't use on a regular basis, disconnect them. You can reconnect them when you use them. Disconnecting them when they are not in use will allow Windows to load the drivers only when needed.

    The above steps should help increase the performance of Windows XP as well as keep it running with more stability.

    Killer Traffic Tactics

    Today in the world of Web 2.0, Social Media sites are one of the most important sources of traffic for your online business.

    Using these Social Media sites the right way can bring in large amounts of traffic very quickly to your sites. NOT using them correctly can KILL your business.

    First of all, let me explain to you what the 3 most important types of Social Media Sites for your online business are.

    1. Communities - These are sites that people go to on a regular basis and hang out. People set up profiles and make them personal by adding photos, writing blog entries on their own pages and making comments on their friends pages. Examples of communities are FaceBook and MySpace.

    (Robert's note - Don't forget that ALL of these tactics and concepts apply to The Spiritual Entrepreneur Community as well! )

    2. Libraries - These are sites that contain collections of information provided by their users. Examples of libraries are Digg, Mixx and Technorati.

    3. Notice-boards - These are sites where people go to and make recommendations to other sites or make posts to on a regular basis. Examples of these types of notice-boards are Twitter and blogs. So what is the right way to use these sites?

    The best way to use these types of sites is by signing up and creating a profile, read the TOS (Terms of Service) to find out what can and can't be done on the site, spend some time in the site watching what others are doing and then do the same.

    The reason why you should do all of this is because if you just sign up and start posting content linking to your site, there is a very strong chance that the site members will see you as a spammer and ban you from the site.

    So sign up and take a look around and get a feel for the site. Set up your profiles like the other members are and then do the same as others are doing.

    For example, lets say you sign up to Facebook. What are the others doing? Well they are adding photos, "updating their status", posting comments on their friends "Walls"... ... Ah yes, friends "Walls". Before you can post on your friends "Walls", you have to first GET some friends.

    Facebook has a way when you're signing up, that you can import your email address list and find contacts that are part of the Facebook community. You can then use this to invite people to be your friend. There is also a search function where you can search for friends by name.

    After you have invited a friend and if they accept your invitation, then you will be able to communicate to them by posting messages on their wall as well as many other ways.

    If you are using Facebook to make business contacts, you may be thinking that inviting as many friends as possible all at once is the best way to grow your business. You can get a couple hundred people quickly and then you can start pitching to them.

    This is NOT a good idea. Think about this for a moment... how would you react if you received a friend invite one day, accepted and then got bombarded with offers from this person right away?

    You would probably be annoyed. You might block this person from being able to communicate with you in the future. You might even be really angry and contact Facebook to complain. If Facebook believes that you are spamming, then they will remove you from their site. And they have every right to.

    So the trick is to spend a good amount of time in ALL of these sites, watch and then do what the other members are doing and then submit some great quality content to these sites slowly. Now if you're anything like me, you have a lot of tasks to complete on your "to-do" list everyday that will make it difficult to spend all this time in these Social Media sites.

    Building a Successful Online Business

    There actually only 3 crucial steps or important keys to developing your online business. I'll briefly write about these three steps, keys or whatever you want to call them.

    1. Online Website Traffic without this essential element your online business will die...period. Many Guru's have there own way of generating traffic and you will usually have to pay through the nose to find out how it is done. Here are some of these tactics that many Guru's use to generate tons of traffic.

    Joint Ventures - This is when two or more individual join forces to accumulate more subscribers from the other guys list. Look for other niche like folks who you might be able to connect with you.

    Article Marketing - My favorite and in my opinion the easiest way to generate traffic. You write articles about your niche and submit them to article directories. This is really a no-brainer.

    Co-Registration is new way to get opt-in subscribers to your newsletter or ezine. You do this by getting your visitors to signup for a free subscription service. Or you can offer them a chance to opt-in to other offers your "thank-you page" that appears after the initial registration.

    PPC or Pay per click. This is one way to get tons of immediate traffic but could also become the most costly. If you have no idea what it is or how to get started in PPC I highly recommend you do research first. There are numerous forums and blogs that talk about PPC in detail.

    (A note from Robert about PPC - DO NOT spend money on advertising until you've maxed out the free methods! If you can't generate traffic using the free tools then you won't do it by spending money.)

    There are other ways to generate traffic such as SEO, Web 2.0, ad swapping and offline advertising. The above four steps are in my opinion the top ways of getting traffic.

    2. Build a subscriber list. It is essential that you build a list of folks who are looking for what you have to offer. Put a form on your website or blog asking your subscribers to join your list and make sure it is an opt-in list. This is really easy to do. Ask your webhosting company to develop a form for your website today. This should be done free of charge.

    3. Turn you subscribers into buying customers. Once you get a large list you can now give them more information about your products. The more free information about your products the more likely they will purchase now and later.
