The following are great books for those interested in doing some reading about Spiritualism. Most are available from online booksellers such as http://www.abebooks.com or Amazon.
Braude-- Radical Spirits
Radical Spirits is a landmark in the history of womens political activism and in the history of women and religion in America . Ann Braude proposes that the engagement of women in the Spiritualist movement not only provided a religious alternative to male-dominated mainstream religions, but also gave women a social and political voice. For some women, Spiritualism and the early woman s rights movement went hand in hand. A great read...
Burroughs-- Becoming a Spiritualist
A book for beginners. Sets forth some of the teachings leading to the advancement of the individual.
Stan McMullin-- Anatomy of a Séance: A History of Spirit Communication in Central Canada
Excellent resource outlining the history of Modern Spiritualism in Canada.
Carroll-- Spiritualism in Antebellum America (Hard cover)
During the decade before the Civil War, a growing number of Americans gathered around tables in dimly lit rooms, joined hands, and sought enlightening contact with spirits. This was the birth of Spiritualism, a distinct and colourful religious ideology centered on spirit communication and spirit activity. In this study, Spiritualism emerges as a reflection of and a reaction to many currents in antebellum American life. A bit pricey but worth it!
