Bible and the Spirit: 1 Timothy 4:8

    “Physical exercise has some value,

but spiritual exercise is valuable in every way,

    because it promises life

both for the present and for the future.”

    1 Timothy 4:8 Today’s English Version

    While praying with this passage:

What do you do to take care of your body?

What do you do that works best for you in nurturing your spirit?

In what ways would you like to grow spiritually?

What do you ask of God to help you exercise your spirit more fully?

How do you live the promise of life in the present moment and for the future?

Mary's Canticle to a Daughter of God

    The unknown….

         not an easy journey.

    Trust in the Spirit

         hovering over you

         and within.

    The Incarnation stirs within you,

         groaning and laboring

         to give you birth,

         to call you to love,

         a love so deep-hearted

         in the whole of your being;

         a birthing of Christ

         in you

         for others.

    You are blessed

         among women and men

         and children and grandparents.

    Desire

         to seek

the face of the living God.

    Listen to that Voice

         deep within you.

    Christ is coming,

         in fact,

         already here.

    Look.

         Listen.

               Believe.

    Rejoice.

         Be patient.

              Persevere.

    Trust and love

         above all else. Amen.

    Soulful Listening to God

I went hiking in the mountains last weekend and in my backpack I carried with me a book on collected spiritual writings. While sitting by a lake, I read this passage:

“Communing with God is communing with our own hearts, our own best selves….Saints and devotees have gone into the wilderness to find God; of course they took God with them, and the silence and detachment enabled them to hear the still, small voice of their own souls, as one hears the ticking of one’s own watch in the stillness of the night.”
John Burroughs (From Canticles of the Earth, Celebrating the Presence of God in Nature by F. Lynne Bachleda. Loyola Press, Chicago, 2004)

I love being in the mountains for it is a time to commune with God and listen to God in the stillness and quiet of nature. It is also a time to connect or re-connect with my soul. What touched me about this passage was the line about taking God with us when we go into the wilderness. The insight is that the God-quest begins with God already being present to us right where we are in life. Before the search party even goes out to find God, God is already there. God is right here in the present moment with us.

Going to the mountains to pray, or wherever the place we need to go to be still, is good for us in order to quiet our hearts, to listen to the voice of our souls, and to be more present and attuned to God.

Where do you go to commune more deeply with God?

Where do you go to hear the still small voice of your soul?

How do you pay attention to God who journeys with you in the midst of your seeking?

Go there as often as you can!

Soul Tending 101 - Using a Code Word to Center Your Soul

A friend of mine is a busy working Mom. She has 3 kids and is constantly on the go. She is also committed to growing in her spiritual journey and makes time to center and quiet her soul throughout the day. She said that these quiet moments help keep her “sane” and manage the chaotic schedule of a busy family. I asked her what helped her the most, and she said that when things get really stressful, she takes a deep breath and speaks a word or phrase that brings her back to center. For her, the word was “listen.” She said she often uses that word while driving in the car, sitting in traffic or at a stoplight. I told her that the word or phrase was like a code word for bringing her back to center within her soul.

For me, I use several code words and phrases: Peace. Breathe. Slow down. Take your time. Be still and know that I am God. I use these code words throughout the day or whenever I am feeling stressed or “out of sorts” with life. I have taken a quick moment to breathe and speak these code words while driving, while shopping, while waiting in a check out line, while sitting in a hectic meeting with co-workers, or while paying bills. I have taken enough time to speak and breathe these words until I feel a moment of calm and centeredness before going back to the stressful moment I am experiencing.

Here are a few suggestions to help tend to your soul this week:
(These are only suggestions; use what is helpful and ignore the rest)

Find a few words or phrases that are meaningful for you, that remind you to pay attention to your soul and to the Spirit dwelling within (they can be common words, passages from Scripture, words from different languages, etc). Find words that remind you of being centered at the core of who you are.

Write them down and carry them with you for a few days so that they become automatic when you need to use them during stressful times.

When you use these words to help quiet your heart or center your soul, take a deep breath and speak them aloud if possible.

Repeat the word or phrase while taking a deep breath as often as possible until you feel you are back to center, even for a brief moment, in the midst of the stress or the chaos that you are experiencing.

The goal is to use these code words often so they become a habit in tending to your soul.

What are your code words to quiet your soul? What words or phrases help bring you back to center deep within the heart of your being?

    Courage this day!

Praying the News - For a Nonexistent Gap between Gender

Let us pray for those who crunch numbers,

    who publish statistics,

    who report studies and findings,

who remind us that numbers add up to gender equality.

Let us pray for those who yearn for a quality education

regardless of their gender or social class,

for those who are gifted in science, math and technology,

and for those who muster toughness

    through these requirements in school.

Let us pray for an end to stereotypes, sexism, and all comments

    that discourage the learning spirit,

that destroy the dreams of the soul,

and that harm the wonder of youth.

May our hunger for education be filled with empowerment.

May our thirst for equality be slaked with justice.

May all of us walk in the ways of doing better.

This we ask O God. Amen.
