    R&B: Past and Present

Previously on “The Spotlight”, we discussed Metamorphosis: RAP to Hip-Hop.  In that addition of Real Talk we spoke on the transition of RAP from the beginning to today’s current form of Hip-Hop.  Now I venture a little further into the music realm and pose the same viewpoint to R&B.  Back in the day, singers sung about love; being in and making it.  Another thing that I noticed was that there weren’t a lot of solo artist, mostly groups in the past.  I’m not going to go ALLLLLLLLLL the way back to the beginning of R&B, just the 60’s and 70’s.  Times were definitely different back then.  What changed? Society, relationships, men, women, what? Could it be the mergence with Hip-Hop? I remember when an R&B artist wouldn’t dare curse in a song.  R&B music is (or should I say “was”) a derivative of Gospel music.  Yet and still today’s hottest R&B artist sing of strip clubs, doing atrocious things to women and men, cheating, money, drug use and other things I never would have thought sung of.  How many R&B artists today release an album without marrying it to Hip-Hop? Do you remember in the 80’s and 90’s when R&B artists used to do their own “corny” raps in a song? The lyrics were funny and pretty corny but we would still know all the words and had the understanding that they were singers not rappers.  I must admit, I miss the older style of R&B.  I don’t even listen to a lot of these newer artists, I mean don’t get me wrong there are a handful of modern artists of whom I listen.  I’m more into the Neo Soul, Jazzy type singers – the Musiq Soulchilds, the Erykah Badus, Anthony Hamiltons, Corrine Bailey Raes, Dweles and my hands down favorite male vocalist – Maxwell.  My question is has R&B downgraded  and if so, why?

Contemporary Sex Part 2: Modern Relationships

GREATLY influenced by the media, music and Hollywood, modern day dating has evolved into a sex driven, commitment lacking bowl of unparalleled eroticism. This perspective is meant to show how modern day dating affects tomorrow’s marriages (or lack thereof).  Today dating comes in many forms from one-night stands, speed and Internet dating, myspacing, blind dating and booty calls. There is also anonymous sex, recreational sex, casual sex, group sex, safe sex, dry sex and a host of other seductive sounding dating categories coined by the sexually active and glamorized by the media.

Modern day dating refuses to take into consideration: bad character, sexual history, patterns of failed relationships, harmful attitudes, child abandonment, HIV/AIDS or other STDs.  Modern day dating renounces the impact of: criminal records, lying tongues, drug or alcohol addictions and child support conflicts. Modern day dating rejects the critical significance of: abortions, incarcerations, serial marriages, restraining orders or the fact that a person is abusive, promiscuous and violent prone or emotionally debilitated. Looks and appearances reign supreme and the mentalities are “Live for today! And “Express your sexuality!” I call these men and women, extreme sexual gamblers

What Has Modern Day Dating Produced?

It has produced men and women who mock sexual purity, openly berate morality and sneer at the sacredness of the marriage covenant. Modern day dating has procreated men and women who bear children they neither want nor care about. It has produced countless unwed mothers and fatherless children. Children who will never know their biological dads because their mommies can’t locate or determine which of the thugs, players, pimps, ballers or shot callers impregnated them.  These males would rather pay entry into a nightclub or purchase a twelve-pack of beer rather than buy a box of pampers for children they’ve fathered.  These smooth talking misogynistic males only view females as sex objects instead of wives or mothers.

Modern day dating has bred multitudes of bitter women who have been played, dumped, lied to and cheated on, who have no hesitation about committing paternity fraud or filing false rape, abuse or molestation charges.  These females now suffer from low self-esteem, bipolar and borderline personality disorders. Their numerous dating catastrophes have caused them to become cynical, angry, enraged, confused, depressed and driven to use mind-altering drugs such as Prozac or Zoloft.  This group of females will go to almost any lengths to get revenge for being spurned or cast aside by their casual sex partners and enigmatic lovers.

Modern day dating has produced a swarm of men and women who if (and that’s a big IF) they decide to get married, have learned some terribly cruel lessons. They have had multiple sex partners, lied, cheated, broken hearts and toyed with people’s emotions.  Did you know that one of the modern day dating standards is to have sex with ten to forty or more sex partners and then get married? By the time they walk down the aisle they’ve developed callous hearts and ill feelings toward the opposite sex.  Like it or not, agree or not, this is the face of modern day dating.  That's why most people looking for true love or a “soul mate” will agree at how extremely rare they are to find.

Has Modern Day Dating Ruined Marriage?

My answer to that question is… “Possibly!” The men and women who have embraced modern day dating practices could have possibly ruined marriage!

Female MCs: Who is the Lady G.O.A.T.?

For over 3 decades men have ruled the hip hop empire with an iron fist.  The male dominated fraternity has made little room for the ladies during its existence.  Even though, women have been a part of hip hop since its induction, they weren’t (aren’t) seen on an equal plateau as their male counterparts.  However there are
females whom have kicked in the door, broken into and tattooed their name right on the chest of hip hop.  Those pioneering women came into the game demanding respect – and got it.  Roxanne Shante, MC Lyte, Queen Latifah and Salt & Pepper are some of the ladies that have left a permanent mark on the industry and paved the way for the sisters.  I’m writing this editorial as an ode to the women of hip hop.  We hear people discussing “who’s the Greatest of all time (G.O.A.T.) in rap” and we only talk about the fellas.  So now I’ve decided to pose the question publicly, who is the “Lady G.O.A.T.?” I’ve included “my” top 3
female MC candidates along with lyrical samples as to why they reign supreme in my Queendom.

    #1.  Lauryn Hill

“I play my enemies like a game of chess, where I rest, no stress, see we don’t smoke cess, less – I must confess, my destiny manifest, it’s in Gore-tex and sweats, I make treks like I’m homeless”

    -Ready or Not

“It’s funny how money changes situation, miscommunication, leads to complication, my emancipation don’t fit your equation, I was on the humble – you on every station”

    -Lost One

    #2.  MC Lyte

“When you say you love me it doesn’t matter, it goes into my head as just chit chatter, you may think it’s egotistical or just worry free, but what you say I take none of it seriously”

    -Paper Thin

“Must I say it again – I said it before, move out the way when I’m coming through the door, me heavy? As light as a rock, guys watch and even some of the girls clock”

    -Lyte as a Rock

    #3.  (tie)

    Lil Kim

“Niggas – better grab a seat, grab on your d**k as this b**ch gets deep, deeper than the p**sy of a b**ch six feet”

    -Get Money

“Wanna rumble bee (huh)? Bzzz throw a hex on the whole family, dressed in all black like omen, have your friends singing misses for my homie”

    -All about the Benjamins

    Foxy Brown

“Yo, NaNa so ill, first week out shipped a half a mil, n**gas freak out, she’s all about sex – pardon check your facts, and the track record I’m all about plaques”

    -Ill NaNa

“Hold up let’s take it from the top I Fox, gets my swerve on floss pure rocks, in the 6 drop Boo and it don’t stop, see money looking alright yeah – what up Pop”

    -Gotta Get You Home Tonight

These are my top female MCs for the simple fact that they’ve all were able to hold their own (if not outshine) their male competitors.  MC Lyte was able to rap amongst the greatest of pioneers and earn equal respect, hence the MC at the beginning of her name.  Kim and Foxy came out around the same era and has had their issues but they are BOTH dope MCs and have their own ways of fusing sexiness, gangstress and content to be on a many of top female MCs lists.  Last but certainly not least is my candidate for Lady G.O.A.T., Ms. Lauryn Hill.  Lauryn just is the complete package, the whole damn show
some might say.  She’s a lyricist, singer, poet, philosopher and mother – to me, she is the female equivalent to Tupac Shakur.  This is my (E. Smith) opinion but I would like to know yours, this one is for the ladies, it’s time to give credit where credit is due?  So I ask again – Who is the Lady G.O.A.T.? • Date / Time:

    Metamorphosis RAP to Hip Hop

    Metamorphosis RAP to Hip Hop

“Once upon a time, not long ago, when people wore pajamas and lived life slow” there was RAP; acronym for rhythm and poetry.  These were simpler times when you could buy a record single and on said single there were three versions of the song.  Version one was the song itself, version two was the instrumental and alas the third and final version was acapella (voice track without the background music).  I would jam the song, study the lyrics and finally spout out my own words to the instrumental.  Regardless the reason for the separate tracks, you had the opportunity to appreciate the “rhythm” and “poetry” individually.  The poetry
(also known as the lyrics) was an important part of the song as well as the determining factor of an MC’s success.  Let’s talk about the term “MC”, which means Master of Ceremonies.  In history the role of the MC was to control the crowd during ceremonies, if the MC could not entertain the crowd he was removed from his position and replaced.  In the beginning people would come simply to dance to the music and enjoy the festivities, while the MC entertained the crowd between acts.  Then the MC began to speak in a manner
which flowed with the rhythm of the beat henceforth creating RAP music.  With all that being said, allow me to introduce myself, I’m Double R (RAP Rebel).  Let’s further examine the role of the MC and the importance of “good” lyrics.

“Rappers stepping to me… they wanna get some, but I’m the Kane so Yo, you know the outcome.  Another victory, unsolved mystery, so pick a B.C. date cause you’re history”, opening lines to Big Daddy Kane’s “Ain’t no half stepping”.  “Now I’ve walked on ice and never fell, I spend my time in a plush hotel.  I’ve stood on many stages, held many mics, take airplane flights at huge heights”, DMC from “King of Rock”.  “There was a Hardy boy mystery you trying to solve, can’t understand why you got involved, but
here’s a clue… try the ghetto master blaster, now think who causes disasters”, opening lines to EPMD’s “Get off the Bandwagon”.  Lastly, a classic line, “I wanna rock right now, I’m Rob Base and I came to get down, I’m not internationally known but I’m known to rock a microphone” opening lines to Rob Base’s “It Takes Two”.  There are so many tracks I can quote that I can write a book on it.  Upon closer look you may notice a similarity of all the verses, found it yet? That’s right, every verse is a boast each MC makes about
their skills on the microphone.  Each artist is making the same claim without the repetitiveness of today’s rappers.  The pioneers didn’t do it for the money, they didn’t do it for the women or the fame, they did it for the love.  There was no money, women or fame, only street credibility.  With each new artist came a new and different style, sound, technique and message.  Every rapper didn’t claim to be a gangster or a big time drug dealer or boast of how many times they were shot or remind us of how much less money we have than they.
They would speak to us about things we could “all” relate to and feel, while talking on equal ground.  You could listen to an entire album and each track served a different purpose and would have some type of message behind it.  There were songs to uplift, songs to inform, songs to inspire, songs to make you dance, songs to make you cry and songs to make you angry not because of the beat but because of the artistic storytelling of the MC.

In closing, I guess what I’m trying to say is… if I have to hear another song about money, dancing or doing something *censored* to a woman, I’ll have to scream!  Rappers and record labels alike, PLEASE hear this; we know you have money (we get it).  If one guy makes a hot dance track, you don’t have to piggy back off of it and make up a dumber dance than the other guy.  I know the song goes hard in the club, but everybody’s not in the club all the time.  Finally, please-please-please… start listening to your own lyrics, you’re a
professional so if it sounds like recycled garbage – write something new! Any questions???Log on to www.SPEntertainmentMusicGroup.com or email, realtalk@SPEntertainmentMusicGroup.com
