Cuban and Jazz Music Special-Mongo Santamaria "At the Black Hawk"

Join me and special guest David Sandoval from the Delexilio "ROCK + ROLL WITH CUBAN SOUL." "These 1962 recordings originally appeared on two LPs called Mighty Mongo and Viva Mongo!, and they capture the barely controlled excitement that Mongo Santamaria's percussion-based music can generate in a live performance. While there are jazz elements present, particularly on some of the standard repertoire like "Tenderly" and "Body and Soul," it's the Cuban elements that dominate. Merengue, mambo, guajira, and descarga rhythms are driven by congas, timbales, and the collective chanting of the band. The authenticity extends to Rolando Lozano's airy wooden flute, while tenor saxophonist Jose Silva adds jazz-based lines that are rooted deep in the rhythm." --Stuart Broomer

An Interview with Manuel Márquez-Sterling. His new book, Cuba 1952-1959: The True Story

I am very proud to announce and welcome special guest Manuel Márquez-Sterling to BlogTalkRadio for a discussion of his new book, Cuba 1952-1959: The True Story of Castro’s Rise to Power. This book unearths a lost world to reveal the undiscovered Cuba during the critical seven years of the Cuban revolution. It brings to light long-buried fragments of history and masterfully pieces them together to lay bare how Castro really came to power.
