Join Dawn as she welcomes back Mary Cook, author of “Grace Lost and Found: From Addictions and Compulsions to Satisfaction and Serenity” for part 2 of our look into addiction.
In Part 1 we learned how to differentiate between something we enjoy doing, a craving and an addiction. When we do something for pure enjoyment we are free to make choices and we are completely relaxed about the decision and outcome. A craving is elicited by an internal or external association, something we either feel or see. We also learned that our brains are constantly reminding us of the behaviors we normally engage in, for example, having a glass of wine with dinner or having a cigarette after. Cravings turn to addiction when we choose to indulge in them repeatedly and without thought. The more we respond to a craving, the higher the chance we may form an addiction.
Addiction is when we lose choice, control and awareness. We start pushing away people that we care about, like our friends, family and kids. We start scheduling our lives around our addictions. and in part 2, we are going recap what we have learned in the first part but now delve deeper into what really constitutes an addiction and we’ll also do a mini-workshop to help us understand and start taking action.
If you are ready to understand addiction and do something about it, this is a show you will want to hear.
