    A PMA Postscript on Printers

With all the buzz about our new DSLR cameras, the full-frame sensor for Sony’s future flagship model, new DSLR lenses the “smile shutter” feature in the Cyber-shot point-and-shoot line and digital photo frames, there was another area of our PMA exhibit last week that was a bit overshadowed: photofinishing. So I asked Jay Kelbley, senior product marketing manager from our digital photofinishing unit, to share his perspectives in this area.

PMA is always a great place to see the latest and greatest cameras, but once you’ve taken all those beautiful pictures, most people need some way to print them. That’s where Sony’s digital photofinishing group comes in. You’ve all seen those photo printing kiosks in retail stores, and those are just the types of technologies we highlighted in Las Vegas.

Our newest printer is the UP-DR200, which delivers up to 450 high-quality 4×6-inch prints per hour, so it’s great not only for photo kiosk and retail photofinishing applications but for event photography as well.

It prints onto four different paper sizes, and is among the fastest printers in Sony’s lineup, capable of producing a four by six print in as little as 7.8 seconds. The system also has the unique ability to switch from glossy to ProMatte finishes by simply selecting the surface-type on the printer, offering photofinishing professionals a new level of performance and profit potential.

We also have a compact version of our PictureStation system, which is less than half the size of its full-size counterpart, but delivers the same functionality, giving retailers more flexibility in managing their floor space, with a smaller footprint in an expandable kiosk system.

Then there’s new Express PictureStation kiosk, a compact model that prints 4 by 6 and 5 by 7 prints; a new “SideCar” unit for expanding our kiosks; and new software that includes Sony image-processing technology with face detection, auto-picture enhancement, support for large-file CD creation support, auto-scene light balancing, auto-redeye reduction and advanced print-color reproduction.

And, of course, there’s our Snap Lab digital photo lab.

So snap away, and remember that Sony has your photofinishing options covered.
