Craig Williamson, MSOT, is an occupational therapist who treats patients with persistent pain problems. He is the pioneer of Somatic Integration, an approach to muscular pain relief that includes muscular retraining techniques and specific, targeted exercises. He lives and practices in Portland, Maine.

After practicing massage therapy on thousands of patients over the years, Craig Williamson realized that certain problems weren’t being addressed by conventional methods. Indeed, Craig’s own chronic back pain seemed to defy his efforts to combat it using massage. The root of his chronic pain, he discovered, was a combination of improper alignment, habitually contracted muscles in his hip and back, low abdominal muscle tone, and most importantly a lack of kinesthetic awareness. Through the process of treating his own condition, Williamson developed a unique method of addressing these underlying causes, which he calls “Somatic Integration”. Somatic means “bodily,” though Craig prefers the definition coined by Thomas Hanna, “the body as experienced from within.” Integration means “blended into a whole.” The method aims to treat habitually dysfunctional movement by retraining muscles to be properly used, toned, and balanced.

Craig uses Somatic Integration at his current practice here in Portland to relieve chronic pain and tension in everyone from athletes to average people.
