WHO KILLED JAZZ ROCK FUSION? –
This week's guests include Kenwood Dennard - a fantastic drummer who has recorded and performed with everyone from Sting to Dizzy Gillespie and Pete Eggers - A great composer from San Francisco whose new release Extreme Measures is turning ears everywhere!
The show is controversial and inspiring according to listener feedback and the hundreds of podcast downloads prove that there is still a great deal of interest in this artform called Jazz Rock Fusion. So why the controversy?
“Part of the problem I see is that the decline of Jazz and Jazz Rock Fusion is in part due to the inability or unwillingness of the post-Miles Davis entourage (John Mclaughlin, Chick Corea, Billy Cobham, Stanley Clarke, Herbie Hancock, Quincy Jones and others) to preserve the historical link they were handed by Miles…Instead they put aside this obligation and trust for their own self interest and popularity…without no concern to the obigation to TEACH, INSPIRE AND GIVE OPPORTUNITY to the next generation. Guys like Hancock and Jones polluted the waters even further by pursuing alliances with HIP-HOP culture for the sake of popularity and mostly financial gain. Most rappers I have worked with have learned to rap in a matter of hours..by their own admittance. Do you think that Miles Davis would have accepted Herbie Hancock Or Quincy Jones onto the bandstand after their first few hours of practice on their instruments? Get my drift?…See you at the next show…YOUR HOST – DARYLL DOBSON
