A lot of people with many followers don't even know who their followers are, or anything at all about them. It's as though they are interested in numbers, not people. And, I know many Twitterers ARE interested mostly in numbers, and I think that's twisted somehow.

This is not to say that businesses shouldn't Twitter; I think they SHOULD! But there is a right and wrong way to go about it.

I get "follow requests" from people, too, who don't have a personal website or blog. Sometimes, they have nothing of themselves on the web at all, and sometimes all they have is a business site. I am more interested in other bloggers, not some guy's attempt to sell me something.

I think part of it is that people see the crowd following someone and assume that someone is on his/her way to the cool kids' table and everybody wants to sit there with them. But sometimes, the person isn't heading to the cool kids' table; they're just the first lemming in the line.

For some people, yes, it does. But people who KNOW, need to see what kind of followers you've got. Also, which followers you're following back. I don't block anyone, but I've got a lot of followers who aren't even "people;" they're only banks, salesmen, and guys who want to pimp their e-book. They follow me, but I don't follow them.
