Sarah Palin And Her Outrageous Rape Kit Policy By Bonnie Erbe Sep 18, 2008 E-Mail Story Print Story Sphere Share Text Size: A A A (US News) Mountains of controversy are swirling around Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's strange policy of forcing rape victims to pay for their own rape kits while she was mayor of the now-infamous town of Wasilla. The most interesting take I've found is posted by Alaska blogger Shannyn Moore who relates the following: I sat with a rape victim during the "harvesting of evidence". Mascara smeared eyes stared blankly out from a cave of shame. "We've got swimmers," announced the forensic tech in the lab next door. My friend didn't look surprised. In her 60's, she was still asked if she felt the need for emergency contraception. Surviving the process would have only been compounded and made worse with an itemized bill; victimized twice courtesy of Sarah Palin and the city of Wasilla. Much can be learned about the Palin Administration's family values from reviewing their spending priorities. Former Chief of Police Irl Stambaugh included forensic rape kits (up to $1,200 per kit) in his budget requests. He was fired by Palin in 1997. In her termination letter, Palin wrote, "...I do not feel I have your full support in my efforts to govern the city of Wasilla. Therefore I intend to terminate your employment... " Staumbaugh headed the police department since it was created in 1993. Before that, he served 22 years with the Anchorage Police Department rising to the rank of captain. Sarah Palin hired Charlie Fannon as the new Wasilla Chief of Police and said it was one of her best decisions as mayor. Fannon eliminated the forensic rape kits from the budget. Though the number of rapes weren't reported, Fannon claimed it would save Wasilla taxpayers $5,000 to $14,000 a year. Palin supporters ought to be taking a much closer look at her record on these types of issues (charging rape victims for evidentiary examinations so their attackers can be brought to trial) than whether she can juggle five children and the vice presidency. This, more than anything, should push women, pro-life and pro-choice, away from the McCain-Palin ticket. It's one thing to oppose abortion on moral grounds. It's quite another to charge crime victims for their own forensic examinations. Such a policy is nothing short of outrageous.

Update on the NJ4 Case 03/15/09

To follow up from the protest, we need to get at least 400 letters to Morgenthau before the 17th to show that the community supports an end to the prosecution against Renata Hill!

It is encouraged that more letters come from the NYC/NJ area. People should also aim to use the letter template below to create their own unique letters, especially explaining to the DA’s office about how the case affects them directly.

    Re: People vs. Renata Hill

    Dear Mr. Morgenthau:

I am writing concerning the case of Renata Hill, who is scheduled to appear in court on March 17, 2009 for a potential retrial. Ms. Hill’s original trial was stemming from an incident in August 2006. Her conviction for Gang Assault was recently overturned on appeal. Your office is about to make a decision on offering Ms. Hill either a retrial or a plea bargain where she would serve a year in prison.

Whatever Ms. Hill’s role on that night, she shouldn’t have to go back to prison. Ms. Hill has already served two years. While she was incarcerated, she was separated from her young son. She also suffered the death of her mother, whose memorial she was unable to attend. I want to encourage you to stop further prosecution in this case, and to release Ms. Hill so that she may get on with her life.

I am writing as a person who identifies with the queer and trans communities. What happened during the incident involving Ms. Hill on August 2006 was terribly unfortunate. I believe that none of the defendants who were changed actually went out there that night with the intention of criminal activity. Life is difficult for queer and trans people, and we ask that your office recognize the constant threat of danger we live with.

Ms. Hill has been punished enough for her role in the event – both by actual imprisonment, and in the impact that imprisonment has had upon her life. I appreciate any assistance you can provide in preventing any further injustice.Thank you for your consideration,

    Sincerely,

    Presented by                  http://freenj4.wordpress.com/

UPDATE ON THE NJ 4 CASE

    http://www.fiercenyc.org/index.php?s=1

2.17.09 Venice Brown time served, Renata Hill next court date March 4th:

On February 3rd, Venice Brown accepted a plea bargain of Attempted Gang Assault with 26 months -time served, plus two years probation. Unfortunately, this means Venice is still stuck with a felony, however she is no longer at risk for any more prison time.

Renata, was not given a plea. Her next court date is March 4th. It is still very important to send letters to the District Attorney's office, urging him to stop the further prosecution of Renata Hill.

However, Venice is still in need of a civil attorney. Dwayne Buckle's civil law suit of $5M against the seven women, is moving forward. Currently, Venice is the only one without legal representation. If you or anyone you know would be interested, please email us
    HERE with your information.

miLiTanT tOnuGe ... Poetry by Moe

wondered about blk unity in her eyes
searched for blk love in between her thighs

    dug deep for blk dreams
    lifted legs for our hope
sending chills down her spine for change
used my tongue to wash away pain
that my fingers tried to stuff away
    militant tongue by trade
    she was my hustle
    worked her like a 9 to 5
just to get that blk minimum wage
would lead marchs to her breast
    just to restore faith
the arch of her back held our survival
her nails in my skin were the fist held high
she took what she called her power to bring back blk power
scarficed all she had ontop of me for our communities
her shout was the guns cocking back
    hearts beating fast
one hand to the sky the other palming her ass
    back against the wall
we fought for blk to remain
we kissed for blk to regain its rein
held tight to remember those forgotten and locked away

    and when she was done
flowed out were the years of blk oppression
    and ill-advised leaders directions
pulled me in close to feel her shake
this is how blk goddesses are made
kissed her forehead so she'd know that blk was safe.
