It’s that time of the year again. You know the drill. Many of us repeat the annual ritual of New Year’s Resolutions. We decide next year will be “the year” and by January 7 that list of resolutions falls by the wayside. Sometimes all it takes is a little behavior modification. This year has been a rollercoaster ride of modifications for soap opera fans on all three networks. As 2011 comes to an end there’s a new hope amidst the chaos within the industry.
Tonight we’ll discuss a resolution I would like to make concerning the soap media. In this new Information Age the term incorporates several media: print, video, commercial soap sites, bloggers and podcasts. How can we find a way to bridge the gaps between our own? For most of us it’s been a contentious year with firestorms hurling from every point on the compass. What can we do in the soap fan community to change the dynamic? And what can I do as a so-called member of the media? I’m going to lay out a few things which happened in the last week to cause me to want to have this discussion.
