Peter Benac grew up in the Vietnam Era. A veteran, Benac served our country just after the war for almost 8 years during a tumultuous time for our military. Rather than place responsibility on politicians, Veterans became the scapegoats in the political debate. Though a proud Veteran, Benac found himself in an awkward position – ashamed of acknowledging his own record of service. The tide turned when Benac was first asked to help at a BBQ for Our Troops event. He jumped at the chance. When Marines being fed learned Benac was “ex-Army” they thanked HIM for his service. It wasn’t long before he realized people outside the military started doing the same thing. Being a Veteran wasn’t a bad thing anymore. Those young Marines opened Benac’s eyes. “I am no longer ‘Ex-Army’”, Benac proclaimed, “the Marines got it right - I am Former Army and proud of it!” From that first BBQ, Benac found a mission and began American Spirit BBQ – “Proudly Serving Those Who Courageously Defend Our Freedom”. Benac’s mission is clear. “American Spirit BBQ is part of a nationwide movement called Operation BBQ,” Benac said, “Our mission is to cater military homecoming and farewell events free of charge as a small way of saying thanks for a thankless job.” As the anniversary of America’s Independence approaches, Peter Benac joins me on Thursday July 1 to talk about his mission, our military and what you can do in your community to help our returning Veterans. In the meantime, we’ll also look at the lighter side of this operation. Peter and I will discuss BBQ techniques – what makes the difference between a good BBQ and a legendary experience. Come share your thoughts and show your appreciation.
