Signs of the Times

  This was prophesied by this Pope years ago but we post it the week that there was an attack upon Christians in a Church in the Midwest and the day the new President overturns  Bush's policy on EMBRYONIC stem cell research....

    St. Gregory the Great had been a monk before he was elected to the papacy.  Rome was in a deplorable state from the political conflict and the plague, and his leadership is largely responsible for helping Rome rebuild itself.  During the plague, St. Gregory led a penitential procession as it passed Hadrian's mausoleum.  St. Michael is said to have been seen by all sheating a fiery sword, symbolizing the end of the plague.  England's conversion was close to St. Gregory's heart and there is a traditin that after seeing some British slaves and hearing that they were called Angles, he said, "They have angelic faces and should be co-heirs with the Angels in Heaven."  He sent missionaries to England from his own monastery, led by St. Augustine of Canterbury.  St. Gregory also ransomed captives, relieved the poor, defende Rome against the Lombards, adapted the Roman Liturgy and introduced Gregorian chant.  He wrote extensively, including the "Book of Pastoral Care" and a life of St. Benedict in the second book of his "Dialogues."
