    Service

    Service

    Yeah I served

I served with all I had

And I left it all there

    I served everyone

    Children,

    Women,

    Grown men,

    Asians,

    Klansmen,

    I served

    Without regard

    Expecting nothing

    But expectations

    Spit at

    Laughed at

    And talked about

    I served

And I still see the faces

    The different shapes and ages

    I served

    With nothing to lose

    No promises of gain

I lost so much by leaving

    Best friend dead

    Girlfriend dead

    Hope dead

And I still can't get a damn job here

    I served

    Trapped by lies

    Bound by my word

    I served

    In the rain,

    Sick

    Home and physically,

A little beat up, but not abused

    Mentally

    Just a mind game

    Disconnected

    From all familiar

    And these new people

    Just don't get me

    I served in 5 am

    Formations to piss in cups

    With dogs in my room

No! You can't go to his funeral

    He was not immediate family

Though he was the only brother

    I ever knew

    My Godchildren

Don't know me or their Daddy

    Because…

    I served

    Lost the ability to trust

    Because

    Time away from a companion

Allows the mind some time to lust

    And just get a taste

    As I served

    Protected freedom

    Without the freedom

    Needed to speak my mind

    Unselfish I gave

    In lands far, far away

    I slaved

    Still a nigga

    Trained in communication

    But wanted as a killer

    I served next to skinheads,

    Indians,

    Guatemalans,

    Lesbians,

    Muslims,

    Freedom isn't free

    Someone has to pay

    We served

    Became a motley crew

    Adams family

    Molded into Frankenstein

    From parts unknown

    Eldest sons

    Only daughters

    Mother, brothers, fatherless fathers

    Marching towards Democracy

    We served

A purpose we could not practice

    I served myself

    Doubt…ate it and refilled

    The plate

    Jumping states

    I can't stay still

    Constant moving

    Left, right, left, right

    Lost in the shuffle

    Grouped in a bundle

Of soldiers who gave all they had

    That did all they could

    The ultimate sacrifice of life

    Yeah I served.

    "It's O.K."

    It's ok

    And so am I

    I always have been

    I always will be….ok

May not feel like much now

    But feelings fade and pass

    The same as bad food

    Only eternity lasts forever

    And it's ok

    To know that things

    So close the heart

    May lose heart and faint

    Because shiny new pennies

    That  hold the same value

    Catch the eye

And…my how tempting that has to be

    But sensing that's the way

    Of those flickering eyes…is ok

And so is the fact that

I ain't so shiny no more

    Not necessarily dingy and grimy

    But my luster has dulled

And I have a few chips in my finish

    But I ain't finished

    By a long shot

Maybe I'm just in the wrong spot

    But it's ok

    I can accept that I

    Can't contend

With the with the external shine of

    Temptation

Not that I should have to

    But as I do

I tell myself that it's ok

    And ain't no way

    I'm going to lose sight

    That I have always

    Risen to the occasion

    Of being a dingy penny

    Chipped and not too pretty

    Passed over by many

    For many money

Say me say many, many, many

    My value has not diminished

And I just might be the cent

To put food in a belly

    Of someone hungry

    Might be the penny

    Grouped with millions

Of others to put a dent into a debt

Might be a collectors dream Coin

    To complete the collection

Of a lifelong quest of completion

    That's why…it's ok

    Tell yourself

    Every day that

I am valuable to someone somewhere

    And one day the one

That will need you the most

    Will pick you up

    Brush you off

And put you to good use

    But until that happens…

    Just know that,

    It's ok!
