DYING FOR AN EDUCATION WITH SUSAN BARRETT

On May 26 education activist Susan Barrett joined us to discuss the many crises facing public education in the US and what we can do to address them. The issue of whether Americans will be educated enough to be responsible world citizens is clearly one that concerns everyone.

Democracy depends on an informed citizenry. The wealthy seem determined to destroy public education iin the US through slashing funding for public schools, privatization, demonization of teachers and a general devaluing of education, other than as an incentive to youth to fight war for corporate Empire.

Susan is a founding member of Save Our Schools in Oregon. SOS is a grassroots campaign that started in response to dramatic cuts in an already underfunded school system in Oregon. She explained to us the role of ALEC in privatization, the co-opting of a nonprofit that was started to advocate for education and is now working to gut schools and promote substandard for-profit schools and other largely untold stories from the education wars.
