On April 21 our guest was Bob Whitaker, author of Mad in America and Anatomy of an Epidemic. Bob has made a career out of investigating and exposing abuse and exploitation of psychiatric patients by psychiatrists and the pharmaceutical industry, respectively. We also looked at the social determinants of the expression of biologically-based mental illness and the far more common problem of psychological disturbances that are entirely or mostly caused by social stressors that only We the People can eliminate by changing the political systems in America and around the world. Whitaker makes the case that the rise in the incidence of various mental "illnesses" is laregly the result of overdiagnosis, the promotion of drug treatment of normal varients in psychological functioning and an overreliance on often ineffective, frequently dangerous and generally unnecessary drugs to treat conditions that are more safely and effectively treated with psychotherapy. I argue that this is an attempt to cover up the true costs of asociety that is dominated by transnational corporations with no concern about the human costs of their quest for dominance not only of markets but power to control our lives. We discussed a model of treatment of psychological disorders that focuses on the strengths of the patient in a program of psychotherapy to overcome symptoms of ADHD, depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders and even schizophrenia. SFPI Radio is the international talk show designed to allow those struggling for social justice around the world to talk to each other about how we can support efforts to promote justice, democracy and peace in every nation.
