If everyone was self-sufficient and could grow their own food, wouldn't that end world hunger and feed the entire world? That's the vision for self-reliant agriculture. Our guest is Alan Silva.

Alan Silva, Institute of Self-Reliant Agriculture

Alan Silva is the Director of Operations for The Institute for Self-Reliant Agriculture at FeedTheWorld.org. Their mission is to end world hunger by encouraging self-sufficiency. They teach families how to grow what they eat, providing balanced nutrition through implementation of a small-scale agriculture model. This makes a measurable, meaningful difference.

For more leverage they partner with universities and strategic alliances. Their model includes education, growing vegetable gardens and field crops, and raising small livestock. It's all based on loans, which are then paid forward, while surplus produce is sold by the families that grow them. They currently focus their efforts in Peru, Ecuador and Kenya.
