    "Playing Saint" with Zachary Bartels

    in Books

Yesterday, Parker Saint’s only concern was his swiftly rising star power. Today, he’s just trying to stay alive.

Parker Saint is living the dream. A cushy job at a thriving megachurch has him on the verge of becoming a bestselling author and broadcast celebrity—until life takes an abrupt turn that lands him on the wrong side of the law. To avoid a public scandal, he agrees to consult with the police on a series of brutal murders linked by strange religious symbols scrawled on each victim.

Parker tries to play the expert, but he is clearly in over his head. Drawn ever deeper into a web of intrigue involving a demanding detective, a trio of secretive Vatican operatives, and a centuries-old conspiracy to conceal a mysterious relic, he realizes for the first time that the battle between good and evil is all too real—and that the killer is coming back . . . this time for him..

An award-winning preacher and Bible teacher, Zachary Bartels has been serving as pastor of Judson Baptist Church in Lansing, Michigan, for nearly ten years. He earned his BA in world religions from Cornerstone University and his Masters of Divinity from Grand Rapids Theological Seminary. He enjoys film, fine cigars, stimulating conversation, gourmet coffee, reading, writing, and cycling.

His debut novel, Playing Saint, has been called an “intrigue-filled thriller” (Library Journal) and “a page-turner from the very beginning . . . gripping and realistic” (RT Book Reviews). His next book, The Last Con (HarperCollins Christian Fiction) will be released in the summer of 2015. He lives in the capital city of a mitten-shaped Midwestern state with his wife Erin and their son.

Pro-Golfer Zachary Johnson says, 'I Thought Being a Christian Would be Boring...

    in Golf

He is an American professional golfer who has a total of 12 victories on the PGA Tour and 28 total professional wins. He won the 2007 Masters Championship and the 2015 Open Championship. He is one of only two players to have twice shot a round of 60 on the PGA Tour. As a young child, he played multiple sports before settling on golf. He led both his high school and college team to state championships. His foundation is dedicated to helping children and their families in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

In an article about his faith for Fellowship of Christian Athletes, he said, "I grew up in Iowa in a great Christian household where church was very important. I went to a Catholic school, so I had religion classes from first through 12th grade. My mom even worked at the church and the school. …So, I certainly grew up in a Christian household—Jesus was very much the foundation.

"For me, however, it felt like I was just following the footsteps of friends and more or less doing what I was told to do. So, after high school, I went my own direction. It was my agenda; whatever I wanted to do, I did it. My faith didn’t carry much significance.

"I graduated from Drake University in 1998 and started playing golf on the mini tours and traveling around the United States. In the winters I would go to Florida to practice.

Can Youth Activists Achieve Political Empowerment?

    in Women

We have seen marching and chanting in the streets of U.S. cities where police have killed unarmed citizens. We've heard demands for social justice. We have also heard demands for jobs and economic opportunities. All of these things are possible with new leadership in the houses of government, which can open the doors of economic opportunity for young entrepreneurs who are prepared to introduce products and services to the global marketplace. The question is, are the youth who provide the energy of protest prepared with a strategy to run the cities by choosing and electing leaders with a new and better vision of how to create a fair and just society? Today's guests, 16 year old activist Lamon Reccord and 16 year old ordained minister Rev. Zachary Love discuss strategies for empowerment. Coach Ernest Radcliff discusses the responsibility of adults to provide guidance and mentor ship to today's youth.
