Just a week ago the 4th Biennial Youth Alliance for Leadership and Development in Africa (YALDA) Conference, held in Nigeria, came to a close. YALDA, whose goal is to provide a "forum for the youth on the African continent and those abroad with a commitment to the welfare of Africa," chose the theme "Innovation and Creativity for a Better Africa: Implementing Your Dreams" as the focus of this year's gathering. We are privileged to have featured on our upcoming program of Youth Initiatives an interview with two participants in this year's YALDA conference – Mani, Joseph Muya, from Kenya, and Dr. Boidun Awosusi from Nigeria.
Mani, Joseph Muya is a Kenyan student at United States International University-Africa (USIU-A) pursuing a bachelor of arts degree in International relations, concentrating on peace and conflicts studies, and doing a minor in psychology. I am also very involved in youth activities and also in YALDA, the Deputy Executive Director of YALDA at USIU-A in Kenya.
Dr. Biodun Awosusi is an international freelance writer and medical doctor with a passion for intercultural integration and international cooperation. He is a LEAP Africa Alumnus and XCEL Ambassador who has participated in trainings for leadership, entrepreneurship, and youth development, where he has spoken on "facilitating development through entrepreneurship." Dr. Awosusi is also proud to have been able to present renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson with the "Distinguished Personality Award" when he visited Nigeria in 2009. Dr Awosusi holds a Bachelor's Degree in Medicine and Surgery from Obafemi Awolowo University and has read topics of Open Courses offered by Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. This conversation went down a few rabbit holes the last time Linda Lombardo and Joss Rowlands were on the air talking about leadership and self-awareness - so much so that we all decided part 3 of this series required a part 2 to cover the topic thoroughly. More importantly, in order to move the series forward to its other scintillating topics, self-awareness was key!
Joss and Linda will be talking about the Dark Night of the Soul; something everyone has experienced at one time or another if he or she is seeking a higher consciousness in leadership, spirituality or life itself.
Host: Linda Lombardo with series cohost Joss Rowlands.
Join Eric Komoroff (www.communityofunity.org) and Dr. Jason Stein (iRyze.com) in a discussion about today's youth and helping them form good habits. Habits can help or hinder success in school and in life. Forming positive habits will more likely result in getting more sleep, maintaining better health and weight, managing the obsessions with their devices, or finishing homework and studying for tests more successfully.
Join co-hosts Eric Komoroff (www.communityofunity.org) and Dr. Jason Stein (iRyze.com) as they discuss the important issue of raising the atypical child. The hosts will be joined by Rita Eichenstein, PhD, who was penned a guide for parents who are struggling with their ‘atypical’ child; be it ADHD, Autism, a learning disability or any other diagnosis. Dr. Eichenstein, a clinical psychologist, notes that the tendency to just focus on the child’s well being is only half the journey; because much of the child’s ultimate mental well being rests largely on the well-being of the parents and she provides tools and understanding to help parents work through the often discouraging process of raising a child with any type of difference. If you are a parent who wants help in coping with the challenges of raising an atypical child, or a professional who wants to get a better idea of how better to understand the parents of the children they work with, listen to these childcare experts talk about the issues.

As the Dark Underbelly of Leadership series continues, it wouldn't be complete without a program on Self-Awareness.
According to Chris Lowney, former Jesuit and bestselling author of “Heroic Leadership,” leaders thrive by understanding who they are and what they value, by becoming aware of unhealthy blind spots or weaknesses that can derail them, and by cultivating the habit of continuous self-reflection and learning.
Easier said than done. So, the question becomes, "How am I showing up?" and how does it impact my reputation, my success, and those who choose to follow or co-create with me?
We are a culture obsessed with celebrity so the idea of a leader who puts the success of the organization and those with whom s/he works ahead of him or herself, well, it just doesn't get much press.
Hosts Linda Lombardo and Joss Rowlands take a deep dive into self-awareness from the perspective of leadership and share the "extra" dimension that only self-awareness can bring to a leader and ultimately, her or his success.
Join co-hosts Eric Komoroff (www.communityofunity.org) and Dr. Jason Stein (iRyze.com) as they discuss an important part of any child's life, the rite if passage. Whether it's a big birthday, or a cultural marker like grade school graduation or prom, the significance we place on these events can create anticipation, expectation, and stress. Why do we build these into our kids' lives and how to keep their importance in balance are amoung the topic discussed.
