Dr. Jared Diamond - The World Until Yesterday -NPTR 42
Jared Diamond is a scientist and author who is best known for his research into the evolution of human societies. He was primarily trained in physiology, earning a BA from Harvard University in 1958 and a Ph.D. from Cambridge University in 1961. Diamond's work examines the factors that contribute to the rise and fall of a civilization and draws from a variety of fields. He has been described as "America's best-known geographer". Diamond's most recent work is a 2012 book titled The World Until Yesterday: What Can We Learn From Traditional Societies? The book explores the topic of what people living in the Western world can take away from traditional cultures and examines the differing approaches to trade, conflict and its resolution, religion, diet, treatment of the elderly, child rearing, and the benefits of multilingualism. Diamond has received dozens of awards, including a MacArthur Foundation "Genius" Grant in 1985 and the 1998 Pulitzer prize for Guns, Germs, and Steel.

Preserving Yesterday and Envisioning Tomorrow
Sanctuaries of the Earth Mother is a non-profit organization sponsoring radio shows, websites, Facebook groups and programs and projects. But what is it? More importantly, why is it? Today we will dig into this fertile land and see what new seeds we plant. With us is Isaiah Webb, who has been following his own vision for a Sanctuaries type property for a number of years.
Sanctuaries grew from a vision of Jim Graywolf Petruzzi he received while on his first vision quest many years ago. Now, its’ time has come. Sanctuaries are places - properties - where people of all walks and ways can come together in harmony and equality to find new, more sustainable ways to work with the Earth Mother and create a healthier legacy for our children’s children. This is through environmental education, sustainable structures and the teachings of the ancestors. Places where people will explore new ways to communicate and work together both nearby and over great distances. All focused on the young.
As Sanctuaries works on this model others are creating similar circles. Sanctuaries is just a name - a placeholder. The vision will take many shapes and forms. Hear from Isaiah his vision for such a place.
Sanctuaries are not unique or special, but the elements they will be compose of are something new - and something whose time has come.
Come and talk with us about these visions and the children who follow us we wish to serve. Share ideas and understand the vision. For the future. For all of us now.
