Roxanna's music is produced by Mark Portmann, who has worked with pop royalty Celine Dion, Josh Groban, Barbra Streisand, Annie Lennox and Christina Aguilera. He offers, “People want to hear real talent, real voices and real stories—something that changes your life. Roxanna’s music does that. She will give you everything you ask for. It’s a daunting task for anyone new in this business and she tackled it like a warrior.”
Among highlights of “Exotica,” “Close Your Eyes,” co-written by Portmann and Lindy Robbins (Celine Dion, Backstreet Boys, Nick Lachey), is a consummate nurturing love song offering a sky-scraping vocal tour de force as Roxanna sings, “Close your eyes, I’ll be here til the sunrise, and your dreams come to carry you far from sorrow.” She notes, “This song is such a parallel for what I saw as an RN, when people endure tough times and you want to offer them hope. I sang two takes of the lyric and we knew it possessed everything I felt in my heart.”

The city of San Bernardino recently made a complete flip-flop from agreeing to draft an ordinance allowing medical marijuana collectives to operate to a full-blown assault on the handful of medical marijuana collectives now in operation. The only problem was that the decision to do this was made in closed session which violated the open meeting provisions of the Brown Act. The shows second guest is attorney James De Aguilera who has filed a lawsuit against the city alledging violations of the Brown Act. Mr. Aguilera will explain the basis of the lawsuit and just what he think really went on behind those closed doors.
Oregon's Prop. 91 will legalize marijuana way better than Washington, their sister state to the North. Allowing for personal growing and retail sales, passage looks probable, but there are still concerns. Brad Reed from New Approaches Oregon is the second featured guest on the show. He will be discussing what Oregon's initiative does to legalize marijuana, how the polling is shaping up, what they are doing to get the vote and how the recent $500,000 contribution by George Soros will be put to use.

While laws were evolve to better protect victims of domestic violence, our music culture also changed to reflect these new developments. It may seem obvious that culture and music enhance each other because music reflects the times. When beauty stereotypes were questioned in the early millennium, Christina Aguilera brought us “Beautiful.” When many Americans began to speak out against the Iraq war, Pearl Jam gave us “World Wide Suicide.” Today, when domestic violence has even reached the seemingly perfect life of Rihanna, where’s the music to cope with unexpected violence? Unfortunately, there’s a shortage of music containing lyrics that support women in harmful relationships. Furthermore, there’s a surplus of derogatory lyrics towards women within the hip-hop genre. Even though the situation for women is evolving slowly with respect to domestic violence, many songs still objectify women.

Such a FABULOUS October already! Gregg Karukas and Kiki Ebsen last week - and two more guests on 10/7 that are absolutely FUN! Jonathan Widran joins us in the second hour of the show - and it's going to be a ball to have him return. Jonathan has thrilled us for years, writing about, reviewing or interviewing Jazz legends. And Pop and Rock artists, too. He's a Chicago native who found his way to Los Angeles and got his degree in English at U.C.L.A. Within two years after graduation, he was introduced to what would be his amazing life via the Catalina Jazz gathering - right around this time - in 1988. Friend Dan Margules had lit a fire in Jonathan concerning Contemporary Jazz - and that fire has blazed uncontrollably (blissfully!) via columns and articles from local publications to national and international magazines and newspapers. He has also managed to write FIVE books on varying topics! Jonathan is considered a "first-call" freelance public relations writer. And does he love to DISH about those in the business :) What a joy to have him with us!
North Carolina born, Geoff McBride, is probably no stranger to your ears. He lit UP "The Voice" a few seasons ago with his blind audition of "Higher Ground!" Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green about lost their minds - and so did WE. The Church foundation of his youth, coupled with the inspiration of Seal, Luther and James Taylor, propelled Geoff into the spotlight that he so richly deserves. If you can blow away his mentor on the show, Lionel Richie, THAT says everything! Geoff's sparkling story is told by way of CD, "Journey to the Soul." He says, "My foundation is in Soul Music - but I am not just a Soul Singer." THAT is because everything he does generates FROM there! Once you hear a few tracks from this Powerhouse, you'll KNOW!

Jones' debut studio album, Hard Core (1996) was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and spawned three consecutive No. 1 rap hits: "No Time", "Not Tonight (Ladies Night remix)", and "Crush on You", a record for a female rapper. Her following albums, The Notorious K.I.M. (2000) and La Bella Mafia (2003), were certified Platinum, making her the only female rapper besides Missy Elliott to have at least 3 platinum albums. She was featured on the single, "Lady Marmalade", which also had guest vocals by fellow recording artists Mýa, Pink and Christina Aguilera (a remake of the 1975 smash hit, originally recorded by LaBelle) which went to No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, making her the second female rapper to have a No. 1 on that chart. In addition, the remake won two MTV Video Music Awards including Video of the Year, and a Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals at the 44th Grammy Awards in 2002. In 2005, she served a yearlong prison sentence for lying to a jury about her friends' involvement in a shooting four years earlier. During her incarceration, her fourth album The Naked Truth was released. She returned to the public eye in 2009 with an appearance on Dancing with the Stars.
